I've considered it before but China's actually on a downward cultural trend in the grand scheme of things. They made some good movies in the 80s and 90s, but even then they mostly played second fiddle to Hong Kong. First post and third post are the main reasons. The amount of work is compounded even more if you aren't skilled in any aspect of it making the barrier of entry extremely high. If you are putting in genuine effort and you only have moderate Japanese skills and you haven't been doing subtitles for like a year or 2, you will probably spend 20 hours subbing 1 episode. I guess if you halfassed it and just typed whatever you could of course do it in a couple hours but then your subs are just as bad as official, though that tends to be the case for most of the fansub groups left funnily enough. Then you will upload it, get like 20 downloads and your first and only response is going to be someone crying that you did one thing (subjectively) wrong. I'm a translator and I enjoy translating so I'm always on the lookout for a show to sub but it's rare for there to be a show that

As an N1 it usually takes me about 6-8 hours to translate (by ear) an episode of anime with about 400 lines, longer if I have to do rudimentary styling or typesetting which I'm not very good at. Maybe I could pump it out faster if I just put less effort into maintaining character voice or making it read smoothly in English but at that point you might as well just MTL it, which is very common for shows that don't get simulcast in English but do in other languages

There's still a vestigial fansubbing scene around, particularly for shows that didn't get licensed, but the bottom line for over a decade now is that fansubbers can no longer compete with the official licensors on speed or video quality, and depending on how much the translator cares, Crunchyroll can even do typesetting that's not far removed from what fansubbers can do. I miss the old days too, but I can see why most people just don't bother with it anymore.

Fansubs existed out of necessity. It wasn't because it was fun or more accurate, it was because there was no other option. Big movies would take years to get released in the West, and more obscure shows wouldn't get a release at all. You were basically shit out of luck until some guy decided to translate it for you. And a lot of the time the fansubs were garbage. Most fansubs were not high accuracy high effort typeset masterpieces. Many were half-assed by people with a terrible grasp of Japanese.

These days most anything worth watching gets a timely official translation. The necessity is no longer there.

He's right, the english spoken in a film is sometimes different from the english subtitles (I watch movies with my half-deaf dad). Most lines are correct, but every once in a while something will be slightly off. Usually each line has the exact same meaning but the actors will add extra transition words to improve the flow of each sentences, or reverse the order of a list of nouns for no apparent reason, or use synonyms, or add extra reactions to another character's line that isn't in the subtitle script.

Been watching through Deltora Quest fan subs. Taken them awhile to do it all, and they still have the final episode to do. Read the books when I was young, and besides QUALITY, the anime is a good fantasy adventure. The fan subs themselves are kind of interesting. So Deltora was originally an English book series from Australia. The anime adaptation made some weird changes to some names like Doom is called Joker in the anime. The fan subs went with original book names and has TL notes for that. I don’t dislike it though. Like there are times English localizers change names in Japanese video games and people prefer the original Japanese names. Kind of the same thing.
