Is it actually good or do people put it as their favorite because no one will complain as no one has watched it?

It's one of my favorite series of all time, but it's a little corny. A lot of the gimmicks in the space battles are ridiculous and some of the schemes dreamed up by the supposed galaxy-level geniuses are not so inspiring. But it's a good story, about what makes men men.

I liked it before /a/ was even created. It is the only anime I would put in my top 5 series ever made (right after The Wire at #1 and Twin Peaks at #2, ahead of Sopranos).

You need to be an *NT* type/be born with a soul/have an inner voice to understand the appeal of LotGH. But it is true that the only reason it's so high on your "rating websites" and whatnot is because the soulless drones are afraid of going against something they don't understand, and what they would call "Nazi chud propaganda" gets drowned out in their mind by "they're heckin gay so it's okay".

I rewatched it about 3 times, and two of the rewatches were just because I looked at the first few episodes again for no reason and couldn't stop. Only TW and TP do that for me.

It's pretty fucking great but discussion ain't what it used to be.
It had a small cult following on /a/ basically since forever. I think in hindsight as the board got more sensitive to pissing it's diaper over /pol/ and anti-/pol/ we passed peak logh. The threads were actually getting better for a long time as it slowly kept snowballing more viewers.

Ive only watched to the halfway point right now (its on hold until I get enough time that I can feel like I can sit down and watch the rest of it in like a way) but it is pretty solid, visually it looks great, the writing is good and the characters are compelling. I think directing wise it can be kinda whatever and that can make it feel sort of boring or poorly paced at times but I still think its super solid.

Ok real talk the reason its so highly rated on sites like MAL is because those websites have like a minimum required percentage of the show to watch for your score to count which iirc on MAL is 25% so you would need to have watched like the first quarter of the show and if you got that far chances are you like the show quite a bit.

Yeah same for Gintama, hxh, fmab, monster, hajime no ippo, etc. One you notice it you can't un notice it. Even things as little as two cour shows get this buff since a lot of normies still adhere to the 3 episode rule. Watch 3 episodes of a 12 episode anime? That's enough for your score to count. Watch 3 episodes of a 24 episode anime? Your score doesn't count. You get an insane buff just by having your show be longer. Same effect with sequels but that's pretty obvious.

The biggest memory i have about it is that the show kept spamming characters and somehow spected the audience to keep track of all of them.
But people seem to love it so maybe is a skill issue by my part.
The desings were refreshing actually, it looks more like european comic than anime

No, it looks like shit, barely animated and the visual direction is probably the worst in the medium (80% of the shots are boring uninteresting medium close up ones where the characters are just talking, imagine wasting almost 40 hours on that).

Yes, the anime is objectively superior to the novels, it made many changes to liven up the dialogue and the subtle changes in acting performances. See my points that I made in my video; if you read the English translation of the novel then you read a watered down product.
