Kira Kira Precure A La review 8!

Really starting to get into the groove of things and things are starting to feel undeniably precure!

Summary for the anons that need it: The girls are attempting to make their first product, but something wrong and Akira notes a burning smell, but its too late as the kitchen explodes with enough force to ruin the whole building; the MoTW sitting outside noting how it only smells failure here. The girls get to cleaning up, realizing just how insanely hard it is to keep a working business running. To this the old man appears in his human form to show them the secret, underground Kirakira dispenser. Ichika wastes no time cranking out the Kirakira and the girls begin playing with it to see what can be done with it. Yukari being the most skill Kneads out some large, decorative sweets. Now that they know its possible to really get things going, they all spit up for projects. Aoi and Akira making the place resentable, Yukari on decorations, Ichika cooking, and poor little Himari gets sacrificed to the raving middle aged women. Ichika is soon pulled from the kitchen to find a giant hole in the wall, only to find it was Aoi and Akira's doing as they tried to fashion tables from the Kira Kira. Yukari is there, churning out sweets decorations by the butt load, and Himari is back worse for ware after the raving moms tossed her out. Depression is high, until a little girl approaches, seeking guidance on sweets for all her friends. Ichika guarantees she'll get the girl something. The girls break for the day, only for a reshuffling of help to happen. Akira goes with Himari, and Yukari recruits Aoi.

Summary continued, because I just wanna ramble I guess: When Ichika appears next morning, she is surprised by Yukari and Aoi's fashioning of a display counter, while Himari and Akira are returning with all the supplies and a supply deal. Everything is on Ichika now, and she fashions a cake so good for the little girl. As she delivers, the MoTW is there to steal candy from a baby. With new found unison, the girls beat the MoTW and return the cake. Finally Ichika announces the new bakery to be called: Kirakira Patisserie! For HS Cure Wing appears pretty early, and it's hard to label Elle-chan a "mascot", I prefer to think of magical babies as a different category.
For WP they're quite literally animals and pets, so it hits different.
Idol is closer to the classic image of mascot cures/fairy cures, but I like their personalities and they managed to pull some interesting surprises anyways.

They still got some nice variety here, though I do agree it's time for someone completely unrelated to a fairy form. Time to bring back a redeemed general Cure.

I would say the giant pile of merch related to him would normally warrant a bigger role in the show than he currently has. I don't have a huge problem with his lack of relevance and character like with most FujiPi clones (though I thought Ouji from Suite had enough going on with his friendship with Ellen to feel like a pretty cool guy despite otherwise being a such a clone in most respects).
I am a bit worried that he'll suddenly become extremely relevant out of nowhere and the show goes to shit in the second half because such a character becomes the focus despite not really warranting it in show, but that's mostly because I have absolutely no idea where Idol is going with this current arc much less with any future arcs.

Splash Star had a pretty obvious FujiPi 2.0 with Mai's brother. Suite's is less obvious with Ouji, but he fulfills much of the same role except it's Kanade who swoons over him rather than the leader Hibiki. After that, the concept was pretty dead in Precure until Kimi to Idol Precure brought it back with Kaito. As expected of a callback season which even brought back the black Cure. It really isn't though. Most of us know OG is a solid 7/10 throughout with a fairly flat, comfy level of quality, Stars fluctuates wildly with extreme highs and lows and you either love or hate the change in core focus, and Friends is weaker than both OG and Stars but has somewhat more nuanced writing for its main cast.
If someone asked me for an imoutocore anime rec, I wouldn't recommend them above one of the upper-tier seasons of Precure (Princess/Hugtto/Tropical Rouge/Splash Star) but that would depend what they're looking to get out of one of these shows anyway.

I do genuinely think the show has a problem with pacing its character focus, and Kaito is just one part of that with his poor cast integration (knowing he has a backstory to reveal later). Nana has done very little thus far compared to how many episodes Kokoro has gotten, and the show feels very Uta-centered in a way that doesn't like she deserves, versus a strong leader like Nozomi, or Hana who had a backstory that related to the main plot. Nana had a childhood connection to Uta, Kokoro's intro episode focused on Uta's reactions over Nana's, and then Purirun has a very strong bond with Uta specifically out of nowhere.

I'm still enjoying the show, but I felt such a major disconnect when Purirun's relationship with Uta went from a funny thing that Meroron didn't actually needed to be jealous over, to a strong emotional bond that I had no idea existed.

For me personally, it feels less like the show didn't portray Purirun's love for Uta seriously enough and more like I personally failed to take Purirun's feelings for Uta seriously unlike Meroron who could read Purirun properly. I think in that case in particular, the shock value is intentional.
One thing I like about Uta is that the show does a solid job of showing she does love her close friends immensely. Like in the last episode, Uta affirmed how much she cared for Nana and Kokoro before going back to Zukyoon stalker mode. I think the closest Precure lead in personality to her is Love, but I felt that Fresh focused on Love's friendship with Setsuna to the point Love's bond with Buki and Miki weren't elaborated enough on whereas Uta, Nana, and Kokoro's bond will at least have the sleepover episode, the handshake episode, and the Trio Dreams episode as a firm foundation even if developing that bond specifically stops becoming a focus of the show.
