Sonny Boy is pretty barebones when it comes to telling a story and seems more interested in presenting itself as “deep” through abstract shit. Like, why bother watching it when you could just watch something that does both, like Heike Monogatari?

Even an anime packed with metaphors and visuals like Revue Starlight Movie managed to tell a coming-of-age story more clearly and effectively by showing the girls needing to move on to the next stage.

Problem with Gintama is how uneven it is. There were some pretty good parodies in there and the serious arcs like benizakura and yoshiwara were good but the rest is just toilet humour and the shittiest kind of "people are shouting so it's funny" comedy. And the serious part eventually became a mockery of itself too with the background drama of war and gin being forced to kill his mater turned into him coming back as a cyborg with laser eyes or some shit.
