Nihei was mindbroken by this mantra too. The way I see it, this probably happens because a manga being too dark for kids is -not- the worst criticism but it is one of the -fastest- observation for an editor to make. An editor can take a manga pilot chapter, flip it like a flipbook for 30 seconds and immediately say "too dark" and they're 99% sure to be correct, it's a very easy thing to spot at a glance without even reading the full thing. They're just doing their job, you can't exactly disagree with the logic that kids are more likely to take intereste in something light-hearted with gags and battles and pantsu, rather than slow-burn horror with faces of agony every pages. It's just not a complete deal-breaker, but it must feel tremendously blown out of proportions for the aspiring mangaka because of how fast an editor can point it out.

It's like walking into the doctor's office and they barely glance up from their desk and they say "you've got extra fat go lose some weight and you'll be healthier". They're 99% likely be correct and they're just doing their job, but the speed and easiness at which they can make that observation makes it a lot more "ouch" than it should be.

I find it interesting how the backgrounds always stay true to the art style in those big moments. You can often tell when an established mangaka becomes lazy and leaves a background to their assistants and the style just doesn't match, but his backgrounds don't convey that feeling at all. I don't know if it's because he always picks the right assistants, or because he does half the background with them so that the style blends well, but he must be doing something right. I don't see a big art discrepancy between the background and character art over the course of his several manga but he has to be changing assistants a bunch of time in-between.

I think it's because standards are different now and old mangaka don't get used to that. Compare the original run of Pokemon Adventures to the current one on KoroKoro. It's much more gritty and edgy compared to the later series. Momo's VA from DanDaDan has a podcast and she invited Luffy's VA once. At some point Luffy's VA says that people from her generation would love DDD and Momo's VA says it feel a bit too mature for younger people, but the former kinda brushes it off.

Bottom panel is my favorite "souboutei must be destroyed" moment. It's not just the artwork that nails it, the timing of the delivery is perfect too. You just don't expect the gentle and mopey main character kid to catch the kino virus this early in the story. Another mangaka would've made this happen after what, 5 or 10 volumes? Fujita kickstarts the pacing without any chill. Generic wimpy kid spends five minutes in that house? Fuck that house.

That makes sense because the manga combines battle shounen with cosmic horror. It reminds me a lot of Arkham Horror style games: try to survive and preserve your sanity while dealing with strange monsters and trying to solve enough mysteries to stop an apocalypse from happening.

Probably yeah. Almost feels like he passive-aggressively made it as white as possible until they told him to stop being silly except they didn't and it broke his soul. Feels bad man. On a positive note his current manga (Tower Dungeon) is his best recent work that mixes his old style and new.

So this is my first re-read of the manga properly and I still don't know whenever THE TWIST aka it was aliens the whole time was a good idea to begin with lol. I mean it makes sense but also, kinda funny ig, definitely not bad though. Even Moonlight Act pulled that twist.

But yeah I really loved Souboutei, probably my second most favourite Fujita manga right after Karakuri Circus. Even if it has its downsides (flashback Namek hitting again) I really loved the manga through and through.

It is which is super ironic, because them being dicks who get redeemed by Takoha and Rokurou results in almost the entire cast of Souboutei surviving til the end. Compare that with Karakuri where most of the cast are inherently good people trying to make it by like the Nakamachi Circus or are literal heroic individuals attempting to save the world like the Shriogane and almost all of them end up dying brutal horrible deaths. If they weren't a bunch of dicks with issues then the entire possession business wouldn't happen at all, Takoha being a reverse Narumi who's completely helpless in a fight but extremely insightful when it comes to the human heart is what makes this work.
In Karakuri Circus the menace is overwhelmingly physical as the Zonapha syndrome is spread by man killing machines, the answer to that is a bunch of heroes who will physically commit to a bloody struggle for survival, in Souboutei the threat is almost entirely psychological as the invaders need to mentally break you to get their host bodies, and even there they're super weak to a lot of stuff unlike the automata.
The funny part is that Yadorigi is the one who comes off as the biggest dick of them all in the beginning and then it turns out she's the least worst (outside of Flor) and the one with basically no emotional baggage.
