It was never suggest he was romantically in love with her, it was suggest that he could have potentially married her and it was suggested she had budding feelings for him. But this manga doesn't read like the kind of writing which treats love as something simple and easy come, if he had pursued her when they were tentatively being set up it might have grown in to romantic love but as it is they had a platonic kind of love and a master/servent and almost sibling like relationship.

When it was conceived she and the father were more 'in love' that anything else presented in the manga. The fact the father was later a dick doesn't change the fact they had a genuine passionate fling of a courtship. Ultimately her character mostly exists to be an influence on Bard.
Also I genuiely wonder who could be interested in the cooking and eating parts of this manga. I must be some Japanese thing that goes completely over my head because I can't imagine anything more idiotic and boring that a fictional character gushing meaninglessly over fictional fantasy world food. I enjoy this as a fun adventure story with a rare mature protagonist and old-school manly sensibilities.
