The old one was better (I'm not being nostalgic; I first saw it last year), the pacing in this one is way too rushed. What happened in 50 episodes in the previous version was crammed into 10 episodes, and because of that, the emotional beats don't have as much impact as they should have because it doesn't devote enough time to characters other than Anne.
The direction is also worse, but that's not it's fault, it's hard to do better than Takahata. The soundtrack isn't as memorable, but the OP is catchy.
Anne is REALLY cute in this one though, so if you already know the story and want to see a cute redhead being cute, it's perfectly fine.
