Honestly, Kabuto's personality in this arc is really interesting, because he feels weirdly "animated" - like he has much more clear dynamics and behavioral shifts relative to who he's currently interacting with more than most of the current cast. When he's with Orochimaru he's the sane man to his boss's wacky antics; when he's fighting against Shizune/Tsunade he's a sadistic thug, sort of implied here and there in the Chunin Exams, when he's fighting against Naruto he seems unusually agitated at the idea that Naruto is really going to risk it all just to fight him; and then once Manda shows up he's now cowering in fear like a Japanese salaryman afraid of getting tossed out the window by his boss

Everything from 137 up to 220 is pure, undiluted filler. The Bikochu arc is one of the highlights due to how memorable it is. Sakura gets some bits here and there but her role is basically over until Shippuden and her studying is an excuse to keep her out of the picture whilr Naruto goes on wacky missions with other squads.

I remember people in the comments from "Re:member" (the 8th opening) yt video saying that was "the filler opening", I thought that was the opening of, well, the filller opening. well not at all, I'm still in the 6th opening here and fillers already started

Your opinion is a very unpopular one. I watched all of it without knowing there was a source material, and even then knew something was amiss when I noticed the main plot wasn't moving at all and each arc was self-contained. It's still an enjoyable watch if you pace yourself.

So now that the arc is over... I dunno, something about it still doesn't sit right with me, in a way that doesn't feel easy to perfectly describe. Kid me definitely would've called it his least favorite Part 1 arc because it has the least action and the Sannin fight was incredibly short, but now that I'm older something about the arc feels kinda "unfinished"? The basic premise of expanding the setting by virtue of getting out of Konoha and searching for Tsunade, who's been alluded to for about 2 arcs now, is a pretty good change of pace after the slugfest of last arc, but it feels like the worldbuilding of stuff that's outside the ninja villages wasn't even remotely expanded upon, and what's real unfortunate to me is that we get some sparse glimpses into the 2nd Shinobi World War, but it feels like Kishi must've hit some kind of writer's block because we get SO MANY flashbacks of Dan and Nawaki (who both barely have any screentime as it is) to the point that it becomes really obvious that he's trying to pad out the arc for lack of ideas, otherwise it would've been extremely short since they collide with Orochimaru and Kabuto pretty quickly as it is (who speaking of which, it also feels like we get really blueballed on actually seeing the Sannin work as a proper team together in the past, especially since at this point we still barely know anything about Orochimaru's Konoha history and broken friendship with Jiraiya/Tsunade to begin with). Maybe I'm just overthinking it all (probably, hindsight is always 20/20) but I feel like the arc has a lot of missing elements to it. Still some pretty good moments here and there though, I particularly like how Tsunade's backstory is a reminder that the setting is honestly really fucking grim to live in.

No that wasn't the plan, Neji never told em to go and pick with teams on their own as if they were hot shit. The plan was to scout for opponents, not to engage. After they found opponents they were supposed to go back to their meeting point, but Lee had to go and disregard orders, and get bodied. I rarely see this arc in anyone's top rankings, but for its one of the best arcs of Part 1.
There is something about the Naruto adventuring with Jiraiya, seeing the Land of Fire outside Konoha, with its life, power lines and shit, no Sakura and Sasuke bullshit, and frankly - Tsunade's mini-arc hits emotionally just right, and Sannin overall are pretty fucking entertaining characters.

I've said it before in a previous thread during the exams, but chunin as a rank is kind of retarded given the reasonings explained in the manga. It being the squad leader role doesn't make any sense when only jounins regularly go on A rank and above missions, meaning chunins would be stuck with other chunins as squad members since B rank is above the pay grade of genin, which defeats the point of so much emphasis being put into leadership. D and C rank missions are basically just fucking chores and manual labor handled entirely by fresh academy recruits or bottom-of-the-barrel ninjas like Gai's dad.
