The problem with anime is its discoverablility is so bad(in the west at least). For ever good anime there are like 20 really bad ones that are complete wastes of time. Once I find a good one I have no issues torrenting it, but I really don't want dozens of shitty animes shitting up my media library. I'm happy all the streaming sites are around where I can watch a few episodes before I decide if it is worth it to download the entire thing.
