Their designs don't come from any interesting need or ideal, just convenience and a desperate bid to stand out.

Popularity doesn't equal quality. Gacha and vtuber shit are both designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator of men who are dumb enough to throw away their money on virtual gambling/3D bitches pretending to be 2D. It's an audience that has shit taste in the first place and eats up anything as long as it has ass and tits. If you want an actual indicator of quality just look at all the artists who explicitly outlaw Hoyoverse on their comm sheets because they're exhausted of drawing dime a dozen complex chink outfits that torture their fingers. Or how those same artists will go crazy on fanart when an actual anime girl becomes FOTM and finally gives them something nice and simple to draw.
