For a show that makes such a big deal about being set in Maebashi, and having Maebashi in the fucking title, they sure barely showed the city off at all. If Mono had too much Yamanashi, then Maebashi Witches didn't have enough Maebashi.

IΚΌd say it is the prototype for Maebashl Witches. It is a short series also made by Sunrise a couple years ago with a similar plot (a witch apprentice granting wishes). There is no direct connection between the two series, but given what we see in this episode, it is fair to say they are set in the same universe.

I counted 5 moments of comedic timing in this episode. 1st was Yuina’s Keroppe jumpscare. 2nd was Yuina not remembering anything (the Witch laughed here). 3rd was the self-aware cliched Azu crying scene. 4th was the explanation as to why gang suddenly remembering again, and the show is self aware again. 5th was the reveal that the Bitches were actually there not to fix anything, but to just retire or something like that.

Who is this even supposed to be? I hope it's not just some random witch hanging out in Maebashi. The show doesn't even address this as far as I can tell. Unless it's related to what Yuina's classmates were talking about, but I assumed they were talking about the girls' original shop. Though if everyone got their memories erased I guess it should erase the classmates' memories of rumors they heard too.

They handled Eiko better than that friend in Yorimoi, since Eiko is still somewhat interesting and her own character rather than a plot device.

That friend in Yorimoi just feels pathetic. The drama happens because of envy, and while it’s worked into the story decently, the whole setup feels unnecessary and leans into cheap melodrama. On top of that, it doesn’t really affect the MC Kimari, in any meaningful way. She ends up feeling kind of irrelevant because Shirase takes over the spotlight anyway.

With Eiko, you can still see Yuina stepping up and doing something. And that’s mostly because she’s just a stronger main character than Kimari.

Which show do you prefer as an β€œunusual” idol anime? Maebashi Witches or Zombieland Saga?

For me, if we’re only comparing season 1 of Zombieland Saga, Maebashi Witches is the stronger show. S1 has a lot of great episodes esp early on, but it started to dip toward the end. I didn’t like how Sakura’s backstory was introduced so late, and the way it was handled felt a bit flat. It kind of brought down my overall impression of the show.

If we’re including Season 2 (Revenge), I’d say both are about the same in quality. Zombieland Saga: Revenge (Season 2) has a strong main plot esp with the whole calamity storyline that adds real stakes near the end. The last few episodes were great, and I liked how the fans accepted the girls despite them being zombies. Yugiri’s arc was especially well done and could have easily been its own standalone anime.

There were some stinker episodes too. I didn’t like the β€œWhite Ryu” one with the radio host Saki admires. It felt like an excuse to bring in some old actor for no clear reason. The new member episode didn’t work for me either. It felt like it only existed to feature Hanazawa Kana.

Might be recency bias, but Maebashi Witches feels more polished overall.

Gunma-chan's already got his own show, and HE actually managed a second season.

I spent three and a half years living on the east side of Takasaki, and often took longish walks to see movies at the Keyaki Walk. I am deeply disappointed that the show hasn't once referenced my signal Maebashi landmark (unless I wasn't paying attention, which is definitely possible): Maebashi Prison. Look up ε‰ζ©‹εˆ‘ε‹™ζ‰€β€”the place was built in 1888 and it looks absolutely badass. They actually had an annual open house(!) where the prisoners sold the crafts they'd made(!!) but sadly it was never on a day I could visit.

The fact that the most interesting thing about Maebashi is a prison kind of says a lot about the city, though.

That’s just Europe being Europe. The thing with Japan is that modern development has already overtaken most of what’s left of traditional architecture. There are a few small towns and areas that managed to preserve some edo-era architecture like Takayama, or Gion in Kyoto. Many also took any old significant buildings and put them in a park away from the town center to be preserved. Tokyo has an enormous open-air architectural museum full of what survived the various fires and earthquakes and bombings. Most structures that weren't castles were made of wood until basically the Taisho era, so those took a toll.

It’s true that it’s hard to stop property owners from tearing down old buildings when they’re economically unviable and real estate speculators are tempting them to get rid of those old junk. But a lot of the real effort in heritage preservation has to come from the government. I don’t know what Japan’s policy is on that, maybe they do nothing at all, or only step in for major landmarks. It’s a shame they’re so rare, because even the small-scale domestic and commercial building used to be so beautiful.

I came across a few comments on other sites suggesting this show could expand into something bigger, maybe even an idol series where the girls go up against other cities like Matsumoto or Tokyo.

But I think people forget that this show isn’t really about idols, even if it dresses like one. Sure the promos featured the VAs doing real idol work, the characters sing, dance, and wear idol outfits. But Yuina and the gang aren’t idols. They’re witches. And witches grant wishes.

It’s still technically an "idol" show because of how the show is presented, but when it comes to the in-verse plot, the characters won’t do things like promoting Maebashi, becoming ambassadors, or performing on the streets. Unless Yuina and the gang decide to become real idols, of course.

Some women, allegedly feminist, were visiting an onsen. They bitched about one of the Onsen Idols they saw and the description of her seducing men or something, and what a bad way it was to rep their Prefecture. Japanese men caught on and raged. Videos were made (the Feminism Rage video has more hits than any OnMusu videos on YT, half of those raging probably didn't even follow the franchise). And it got to the point when Onsen Musume Committee decided to rewrite those chara descriptions. Looked at the deleted MV just now. Given how conservative people who run onsens are, I can't imagine them being happy about being promoted with naked lolis lol...

Ahem. My Onsen Idols are pure. When I dip into them and feel their warm embrace full of questionable health benefits I know they are pure.

They are pure. Like all Idols

Like Princession Orchestra
Like Kimi to Idol Precure
Like Maebashi Witches.

On the topic of OnMusu, I was thinking about that onsen I visited (mainly cause she was voiced by a VA I liked).

Seems she's still promoting that onsen. The onsen which was pretty much the same one Sen worked in Spirited Away.

But where the fuck's the crossover with Miyazaki? Or do I have to make it happen myself?
