The End!
Now that it's over: what went wrong? Why didn't the Bokuben crossover chapter save it?
>>279688390I guess it just didn't click with Jump readers. Maybe the setting. I liked it, at any rate.
Comedy with serious elements didn't work because you don't know if it's a serious situation or a joke. If it was a dark story with comedy and romance elements to lighten things up it could've worked. Also missing nudity.
>>279688531Reddit really liked it from what I saw, but Japan didn't care much about it at all. Barely any talk on Twitter or 5ch, and 2chan didn't really care for it much at all. It seemed to be more popular and better-received in the West than in Japan, and I don't know why.
>>279688390I think there just isn't enough of an audience for this kinda manga in Jump right now. Romance is always either front and center cutesy stuff or totally irrelevant side plot to an action shounen nowadays. I think it would've lived as a digital only series.
Thanks for delivering as always
>no Toby arc>no Misery and Hakua arcs or development>no Elio date>no Syd parents chapterWe were fucking robbed.
>>279688614>>279688716Tsutsui seems to have been avoiding drawing ecchi since Kosaki-chan. Bokuben didn't even have pantyshots until the routes. I guess him holding back backfired and being so tame backfired, and even the hot spring chapter was too little too late. Meanwhile, Hima-Ten has done occasional lewds and is doing way better.
Garbo ending. If you want to commit to him picking Souffle then do it instead of demeaning the other girls by making them throw themselves at him after it's obvious he doesn't like them
>>279689097yeah, he could at least have taken out the part where Syd rejects the harem idea, it just feels weird to do this on your last chapter, maybe he was pissed at some readers, tho I doubt the 10 people who read this thought it would have a harem end
>>279688343Harem end...
>>279688390The main guy is too handsome and popular with women for self-insert. This manga probably is more popular with women than men
>>279688390I'm not so keen on the confirms a winner but fails to properly commit to that confirmation ending. it's well written enough but that sort of half cop out feels weird
For a moment I was actually worried they were gonna do a harem ending, glad it was just a setup for a joke, but I feel I had valid reason to be worried given several jump things have recently had sudden polygamy, and I feel partially responsible for cheering for it when Xenoblade did it
Lulu should have won
Must be weird for the author completing a big romance series that is able to get each girl their own route, moving to a new series that is still in the romance area (unlike 5toubun -> Sentai) and it end up getting cut before reaching chapter 30. Maybe he'll move away from romance and try something new.
>>279688614I think comedy in general is just doing bad. Only gag series that has been doing decent enough in several years is Roboco.
Surely next manga will have a Sensei_clone as the main girl.
>>279688390Well it was fun while it lasted
>>279688143Lmao, so that's why she's mad at them.
>>279689871getting cucked is part the family business too
>>279688277I can't believe best girl was a guy after all.
>>279688143>lose the owl>seethe for decadesFunny. Lulu should have Syd's children in retaliation.
>>279688390Thx mate. Guess it wasn't the kind of series Jump fans like.
Good thing I was not following the series every week, saved from the disappointment.

>>279688317>>279688343>Harem EndWow that's a surprise, but a nice one.
>>279688390Honestly, I'm really sad. I liked this series a lot and I don't know why it didn't resonate. It's a real shame, I was all in on it.
>>279688390I liked it...
22i is so good at character design and light hearted stuff. Maybe he bit off more than he could chew.
I am not a schizo but it genuinely makes me angry that this got axed and not himaten. Syd's girls are so much hotter and have more interesting personalities. Himaten is the most boring thing ever.
Good riddance. 22i is a fucking hack. Negi won.
>>279688390What was the last time "mystery/detective" manga was successful in shonen jump? maybe the magazine readers are full shonen retards.
>>279688937>Hima-Ten has done occasional lewdsThe girls aren't hot. I don't want to see an ugly girl's panties.
>>279689568I think harem ends are fine in some works but this isn't one of them.
>>279690298No one likes ranger reject outside of its character designs.
>>279688343I'm gonna pretend this was a harem ending.
>>279688390>I hate being a detective>But I promised to become the best detective>But I want to stop being a detective once I'll find the girl I like>But I'll continue being a detective
>>279688343I'll pretend it ended here. it's a good ending.
>>279690596>>279690492+1
When something gets axed and has a "And their adventure's continue!" end you are allowed to pick whatever you want.
>>279689940I've been saying Mr. Lulu is best girl since Chapter 2.
>>279688390>Now that it's over: what went wrong? Why didn't the Bokuben crossover chapter save it?Shut the fuck up Mami Kawada lover.
>>27968839022i really needs to get in times and realize the Komi method doesnโt work with Jump readers anymore. Otherwise, go to Kodansha and follow Reijiโs steps.
>>279690317Conan ruined the mystery/detective genre for manga. If you want to consume more, you gotta resort to novels.
>>279688709Reddit also liked Red Hood and cried tears of blood when it got axed.
Westoids seem to be unable to comprehend that only Japan's opinions and thoughts matter and they're just useful idiots at best.
>>279691001I got filtered on the second episode of that anime, I had an epiphany and told myself "why the fuck am I watching this", a full episode about the most pointless "mystery" possible.
Motherly imouto is an underrated trope, wish she didn't feel so out of place in the setting with the robot shit. She could've been a gentleman scientist or something instead.
>>279688614Tell that to Gintama.
Will they at least replace it with a new romcom?
>>279691270Time for another sports manga, Kendo maybe or Judo.
>>279691257>reading Gintama for comedy or actionIt was just a vehicle for BL.
>>279688390The bokuben crossover killed it, it reminded everyone how this fag can't write romance not mystery
>>279688390Bad end to an average manga. I hope he tries again, he draws cute girls.
At least it never got to the stage where I started caring
>>279691257Gintama's first legit serious arc was benizakura and that was like 100 chapters in
You may also bring reborn up as it sat as a comedy for like a year until it eventually branched out into action
One thing is slowly building it up and another one is trying from the get go. A comedy series needs to first be a good comedy then it can build up into becoming more action-focused. Trying both things at once requires lots of skill
>>279688390why can't we get UU treatment bros?
>>279689645In theory you can make that concept work, but if you're an author well known for goofy comedy and you use goofy comedy all the time in your murder mystery detective story so that even your murderers are at least partially goofy dorks then you have a problem. How do you convince your reader when everybody has to assume "ah, that's surely just a joke"?
mmmmm

>>279687918 (OP)SO IS IT A HAREM ENDING OR DID SOUFFLE WIN?! I'M SO CONFUSED, at least we got Misery at the end. I know deep down she actually wins by killing Syd and keeping his harem for herself
>>279692393Souffle won, but said she'd be fine being in a harem. So you can have your cake and eat it too.
>>279692095Everyone lost, even 22i
>>279692393>killing Syd and keeping his harem for herselfBased
>>279693069I mean if everyone gets a happy ending, she should as well. She's the most based character, I think there should be an spin off series based solely on that concept of her accidentally murdering and then reviving people.
>>279693416I bet Misery could have save the manga if she had more screen time.
>>279688343SEEEXXXXOOOOOOOO
>>279692095Me for letting us see Fumino one last time.
>>279693675absolutely, it should've been
>Madhell Misery Killthy: To Love is to Murder!
>>279694088Fumitrash a shit
>>279688050Yeah just let this die to the axe
>>279688390Thank you. As a Himaten fan I've wanted to catch up with this but didn't have the time, I will start reading it this week (and Bokuben too). Anyway, I'm looking forward to Tsutsui-sensei's return.
>>279694377She was too good for this manga.
>>279694377I love this dork
Shame we won't be seeing anymore of her.
What an awful ending. Flam won the manga, though.
>>279688390I guess the Himaten girls were more popular. And now Nue's Exorcist is also leaning heavily on romcom elements, so Syd probably couldn't find its stand. We couldn't even get to see a not-Uruka.
At the very least, I'm glad 22 got to make another series on Jump, and other Shueisha magazines if I'm not mistaken. Naoshi Komi has just managed to get oneshots since Nisekoi ended
>the whore of Babylon wins again
Thank, I hate it.
>>279692095The serial killer teacher got away without an arc.
>>279688390Unpleasant. What an distasteful ending to this series, and to think this was the same guy who created Mafuyu.
But even bokuben had it's lows (everything with ur*ka), so maybe this manga would have been better if it had a chance to get more chapters. 22i Should just create his new manga with hags.
>>279695570My guess is that she was going to be Lulu's relative, but now we will never know.
>>279695714> My guess is that she was going to be Lulu's relativeIn my head she was Hakua's mother because there was this one picture where she held a baby in her arms. But I don't see a way how he could've made an arc work for a dorky mass murderer.
> woops, killed another one
>>279687918 (OP)How long have they been behind bars?
>>279688050>>279688091>>279688111Homewrecking whores
>>279688301>I was pointing at the female inspector in the cover"Harem ending" my foot
>>279695714To me Bokuben was always an incredibly consistent 6.5/10 manga. My fondest memories of it are more about the discussion threads, the fandom rivalries and the meme translations.
>>279691987You could said UU really get lucky :^)
>>279688343Well at least it was harem end-ish.
>>279688390Obligatory "would this have survived on Jump+/Magazine/Sunday/etc?" post
>>279696073Easy, just make her appear for one chapter and also she tries to hide it or something. Spy x Family made a whole series about this concept.
>>279688390I will miss this, I liked this and looked forward to it.
>what went wrong? No idea. There's way more boring/generic shit going on on jump, no idea why this would be neglected, out of everything.
>>279688614I don't think so: I think the moments were balanced very well and the direction made things always clear enough. The ship arc was great.
>>279688390>what went wrong?Ink is too expensive apparently. just check Hima-ten-dicks-in-a-row sales. I bet they sell almost the same and use half the ink per page
same reason MMYY got axed instead of a certain manga filled with copypasted panels
>>279697612Nips simply to do not like Syd. It's almost always at the bottom of the ToC.
MMYY problem is the lack of direction, should have kept Mama and Minerva relevant.
>>279697612Or maybe mamayuyu was directionless crap.
>>279698009Yep, Kagurabachi had nothing to do with Mamayuyu being axed.
>>279698045>one series finds its niche and the audience buys it>the other just flails around and fails to build oneTheir fates would have been the same even if they debutted in different batches.
>>279698009show me a single panel from current jump as detailed as expressive or as entertaining as the one from my previous post, let alone one that embraces the medium as creatively as MMYY did with it's amazing paneling and use of sfx
>>279695486the author certainly ha a type. cant complain tho I liked souffle the best
>>279698009Mamayuyu's art was a lot better than Kagurabachi's but that's really the only thing it had going for it. It didn't lean hard enough into either the harem bullshit or the mom x son bullshit, as it couldn't stand on it's own as an actual story with stakes. I don't like Nue's Exorcist but the author knew to aim for the harem/wish-fulfillment angle from the very beginning and was rewarded for doing so.
>>279698288>as creatively as MMYY did with it's amazing paneling and use of sfxMaybe the author should have focused on something people actually care about like characters, story or making his action not suck shit.
Uhh... Blue Box just dropped a NTR foreshadowing
>>279695673Maybe what Syd needed was some SPICES.
>>279698584Maybe a doujin by TerasuMC could have save this manga.
>>279697612you are crying because of MMYY? That shit was instant axe bait after ch.1, it felt like a one-shot that someone forced to continue, it was obvious the mangaka didn't know what he was doing from the start, the forced waifu bait was fun I guess tho
>>279698584ah yes, NTR "everyone's" favourite tag. it's not like it kills whole series like that one where the MC can read minds and the FeMC has bad luck (Magokoro Scramble!)
>>279688390Tsutsui isn't a genius so his characterization of geniuses in bokuben was extremely shallow and the series was only redeemed by sensei's ass.
Tsutsui isn't a mystery writer so his mystery plots were not compelling whatsoever and lulu's ass wasn't displayed prominently enough to save this one.
I still can't believe Hima-Ten outlived it.
So Urucute won (again) but the author pussied out (again). This shit is so ass.
>>279688390It didn't work because the girls were one dimensional and the mysteries were typically unfunny.
>>279701139>the girls were one dimensionalSeveral fans disagree.
I can't believe I seem to be the only one who's genuinely shocked that Syd didn't last.
>>279702448several anons mentioned that Hima-ten-cocksinarow should have been the axe cushion
I personally blame Toby for this
>>279689635his first few manga weren't really romance, anyways
>>279702448Another case where it's only popular in the West.
>>279689635The romance part was subpar, there is hardly any romance. the mystery part was dumb, with no tension and always resolved in the most dumb and light hearted way. The last few chapters were rushed, unfunny and boring.
>>279702448you and me both, I remember reading the first chapter and thinking it'd stay cause it was funny and had some of sexiest character portraits to grace jump in a minute.
>>279702837>only popular in the West.I wouldn't be surprised, since I love it and I'm from burgerland, but how is it more popular in the west than in nipland?
I hope the editors already went into witness protection.
>>279704114>how is it more popular in the west than in niplandMangaplus comments and Reddit discussion are more active and more positive than Japanese Twitter, from what I've seen. 2chan also didn't talk much about it except maybe in the context of it getting axed, and even when they did talk about it, it wasn't exactly positive.
I liked Bokuben and like tsutsui's artstyle. I wanted to like this manga, I really did, but it didn't land.
>>279704258>>279688390that makes sense and
>even when they did talk about it, it wasn't exactly positive.that's a bummer, can only imagine the reason it didn't land with readers in Japan is because of the setting, or maybe they didn't like how similar it was to Bokuben.
>>279697612I miss you Elysia posterโฆ
>>279704987I don't know if it's a case of survivorship bias where most people who read the manga didn't like it, leaving just the fans to comment on threads, or if it really did appeal more to the West than to Japan. I have seen some negative comments/posts even in Western online circles, but they're the minority unlike in Japan. I am seeing some talk about it on Japanese Twitter today (search "ใทใใฏใฉใใ"), but it seems to be mostly because it ended.
Well, time to give Hima-Ten a chance. Maybe catch up on bluebox too since I dropped it when the ugly dyke looking rival was introduced.
Possibly for the last time ever, rank both casts (separately).

Can't help it, I'm a Foom hater.
I think one issue with Syd is that it could never stand on its own. Even in this very thread, you keep seeing people comparing it to Bokuben, rather than Syd having its own identity. While comparisons are inevitable given that the author is a veteran with a previous successful work, if all people could do is discuss the series in comparison to an older one, then that's not good. Even Ayakashi Triangle was sort of able to stand on its own eventually and not everyone talked about or compared it to TLR by the end of its run.
>>279706052Mafuyu > Fumino > Rizu > Asumi > shit > Uruka
Lulu > Elio > Flamberry > Don't remember the name or care about the others.
>>279706544Elio was cute. Please don't compare her with Trashmino
>>279706591I think part of it is because Bokuben was big on /a/ with waifuwars and meme translations and stuff. So it's inevitable for fans to want to remember the old times and stuff. I'm sure had the series continues fo flesh out itself, we would've gradually discussed Bokuben less and less.
>>279706868Too bad we never got that far. Now that I think about it, I wonder if more fanservice could have saved the series. I know that several Western fans wanted less ecchi/fanservice, but the Japanese do have different tastes and it was they who were the basis for decisions relating to axing.

>>279706052My memory is not great, but I think for Bokuben it was:
>Foom>Sensei>Senpai>Uruka's tanlines>RizuAs for Syd Craft, the story and the characters weren't yet developed enough for me to develop a clear ranking, but I guess:
>Elio>Lulu's lulus>Soufflรฉ>Misery>Inventor fake-imouto (her design was still pure sex, too bad she didn't have time to develop her character as much as she had developed her chest)I'm kind of shocked that I basically ended up picking Fumino in both cases, I'm not even a flatfag. Maybe I put my personal liking for the girl on the same level as how I would like her arc (as it looks like in my head) itself.
For example Asumi is the farthest from my taste in Bokuben, but I liked her plot angle and I really wanted her to succed with her family work, so she ended up third in my list regardless. Rizu was a bit boring by the end and lost all of her momentum, but at the beginning I thought she was also a very strong contender.
Frankly I liked all the girls one way or the other, in both manga.
>>279713001It's understandable in this case. No pick would have felt convincing with this limited amount of chapter.
This was clearly intended to be a slow-burn, romance-wise, but instead it didn't have the time to sell any route well enough.

>>279720391U-unexpected backfire!
>>279688277>Luce present in the end with everyoneI'm glad.
I kinda expect tht if the manga went longer, he would have used as a red herring for Zero Craft.
>>279717185>SHIT-BLUEI hope it goes full NTRbait and gets axed because of it. God, what a boring slop.
>lust over qt>date qt>took forever for a kiss>won't fuck her even though they are all alone in her own flat
>sinister bishounen villain
>Luce bromance
>Victorian setting
>this
>none of it was of any use to attract the fujo money
What's the secret formula...
>>279723715You don't know what attracts the fujos. Check out Yลซkoku no Moriarty, that's what fujos want.
This anon said it in a previous thread
>>279067696
>the last thread will also die before bump limit, like many before it
It's not fair...
>>279728164The struggle is real.
Stealing the last post for myself before going to sleep.
It's my win at last, Syd Craft!
>>279729722NICE TRY, NOT BEFORE I KILL THE THREAD AND SYD CRAFT!
Time to finally read Bokuben.
>>279731387It's a very by the books romcom. I genuinely think it was hard carried by the /a/ discussions.
Ever since the axe became obvious I keep thinking about exactly when Tsutsui found out the decision to axe it, or how he reacted, or even how he broke the news to his assistants. I wonder if the team felt somber working on these last chapters, knowing they got axed, or if they were professional to the end. It also made me think about how mangaka and their assistants feel about axes and what the mood is like as they finish their last few chapters.
>>279732165>they were professional to the endI think the emotion they felt as writing these final chapters after getting the axe notice reflects in the last chapters. There's almost nothing of what made Syd Craft the fun romp it was before the obvious axe notice
>no fanservice>no funny misunderstandings>no more clumsinessjust trauma dumping, lore dumping, and you only get a bit of the aforementioned bits after all is said and done in the last 6 pages or so of the final chapter. The serious somber vibe bled into the story, wish they took more liberties and went all out like how Embers is kinda doing rn before its last chapter
Elio would've been the best in bed out of the three
>>279732585How do you think Tsutsui felt?
>this will be the last Syd thread ever
Feels bad
>>279734474We can have a Misery thread once in a while.
>>279732800Souffle and Lulu had the most flexible bodies and stamina to go for hours.
All Elio can do is whisper lewd quotes from her books to Syd's ear.
>>279734474I'm mostly sad we never made it big enough to get Lulu porn. Not even AI slop.
>>279735222Just use Mafuyu porn.
>>279734607what about misery?
>>279735294Maybe she can try erotic asphyxiation.
>>279734544Have they done well before?

This week's issue #29 of Weekly Shonen Jump marks the final installment of โSid Craft's Final Reasoningโ.
Thank you so much for your support in this short series of just over half a year. The FLs and words of encouragement I received really saved my life many times, and I was able to enjoy drawing it all the way to the end.
However, the book will include some stories that we had to cut out due to circumstances, so we would be happy if you could take a look at it.
I would like to try again in the future, and I would appreciate it if you would support me again when I do so.
Thank you very much!
>>279737045>However, the book will include some stories that we had to cut out due to circumstances, so we would be happy if you could take a look at it.Nice.
So it's not the last chapter in a way, after all.
SHOULD
HAVE
BEEN
A
DETECTIVE
CLUB
>>279735316>she plans to strangle Syd masking it as erotic asphixiation>she actually ends up enraveled in her own keikaku, ending up in a suggestive shibari all by herself on accident somehowAll the lost potential!
>>279737045I choose to believe that circumstances mean censorship rather than the axe and we get some nice ecchi
>>279688390>Now that it's over: what went wrong? Why didn't the Bokuben crossover chapter save it?22UI Focus too much on Case of the Week with Girls than on the main plot.
It's should have a long arc mytery case.
>>279737308Terrifying truth.
>>279737045>>279737262>>279738683Probably gonna be an epilogue chapter like what happened to previous axed series.
>>279739450I hope it's a chapter of aknowledgement/closure for the minor characters in the series as well.
So, 22i likes to have the "childhood friend" win, and have a single winner but also throw the other girls a bone by giving them a "win" too.
>>279688390>no highschool setting for relatability>no high stakes to draw people in>MC has no flaws and is too nice so it doesn't appeal to edgelords>case of the week shit with literal who's that nobody cares about>not enough coombaitShit was just outright boring.
>>279737045>I would like to try again in the future, and I would appreciate it if you would support me again when I do so.I'm looking forward to reading those! I wonder if he'd continue making Syd Craft elsewhere, or if the next series will be something new altogether. Regardless, glad to read he is far from giving up making another story.
>>279741405>I wonder if he'd continue making Syd Craft elsewhereI don't think so, since for better or worse he could give it its intended ending.
I could see a spinoff in the same setting however, like with Misery as protagonist anon just can't let go of Misery: episode 34.
>>279737045Sorry Tsutsui, it's likely that your next manga the childhood friend will win so it will be boring.
22i should take a hint from the nisekoi spinoff he did and go for magical girls + nipples.
>>279742149>before 22i everyone always complained that childhood friends never won and that first girls always did instead>22i he opens the revolution with the winning third girl childhood friend>now people reprimands him for itThe lonesome path of the hero.
>>279737045I wish I could tell 22i that he's a god tier character designer and maybe he should try a project where that is his job.
>>279742851The problem is his childhood friend sucked. When people complain it's because the cf is great.
>>279688390Maybe one day some studio will pick it up due to its popularity in the west just like Black Torch
>>279741566not even kidding, I'm going to make a madhell misery 4-koma series. Would slightly alter the name but it'd still be her deep down.
>>279743018>The problem is his childhood friend suckedI wasn't arguing that, but it should be noted that Souffle is good, so I don't think it makes sense to complain about it from a broad angle.
>>279743739I honestly think Uruka was fine too. It's just Mafuyu was exceptionally good for that manga and it's setting.
>>279737308we need a time machine
>>279747180Maybe Hakua would have bult it in 50 chapters or so.
>>279743058>some studio will pick it up due to its popularity in the westWe can only pray that doesn't stay as rare as it is.
>>279752102While the current situation is sad for Syd, if that became commonplace then the usual western normalfag shit taste would ruin anime.
>>279688937Well, technically Lulu in her Mistcat work attire is sexier than most "regular" fanservice in my opinion, so I never felt the manga was lacking in that sense.
>>279737045This will probably never get licensed here since it sold poorly in Japan, but if it does I want to buy it to check what the volume extras were.
>>279753766That's true. I can't speak highly for the average Japanese consumer either but you can do worse than isekai slop.
>>279739674NTA but that's what I'm hoping for too.
>ywn have mediocre dead fish sex with Rizu
A crime I tell ya
>harem end
Based. Hopefully Himaten goes for one too.
Last post for Lulu's delicious, succulent ass
>>279739829Dare I say, based?
So are people here gonna continue reading Jump or pick up other series, or are you all gonna quit reading Jump and/or go into hibernation?
>>279766152I wonder how further could she have been developed had it not been for the axe
Why do you guys get upset about this got axed and get mad at Himaten for existing? Not like I care about himaten tho.
>>279768649I'm reading both, but I must be in the minority since it seems like most Syd fans here don't. And the few who do seem to prefer Syd to Himaten.
>>279768649I read both, but Himaten really is boring and bland.
>>279690278>not himaten. Syd's girls are so much hotterNot while Kanna, Sumire, and sensei exist
>ctrl+f hima
>21 hits
You guys feeling okay?
>>279737045Next time he should try an MC that is incompetent. Would've been much more fun if all of Syd's deductions were dead wrong and the side characters have to help to keep up his facade.
>>279768571This was actually the first jump series I've read in 2 years. It low-key restarted my interest in shit from the magazine as it got me to pick up Hima-Ten too and afterwards I'll catch up toBlue Box. Maybe check out some of the newish manga like the one by the act age author, and catch up on One Piece and MHA.
>>279768649I read both too. I see Hima-Ten as a diet Nisekoi (and Nisekoi was diet love Hina anyway).
Toby deserved a better introduction.
