Why the Historia plotline if Eren was just gonna incel out anyway? Why mention all the stuff about inheriting the Titan Powers after the current user dies of the 13 year curse? Sure Pieck and Falco's characters needed it, but there was a window where it seemed maybe the Farmer was a coverup, and Eren's plan was to kill Beast and have their (EH) newborn child inherit the power as a safety net. Yeah. Hindsight is always 20/20 so I was hopeful that Armong winning the Sermb Owl would lead to Armong becoming some great leader or some shit. Then he turned out to just continue being a faggot.
I get why Isayama had Armong live. Armong has been there since the beginning, he's Eren's best friend, etc. It would hurt to lose a main character, yadda yadda. But honestly it could have worked. Put some real weight in the series. It could show that the characters don't all have plot armor and shit can go down. Armong dying would imply Eren and Mikasa could die at any time. But of course, it had to turn into a typical shounen where the main characters can never die. It's a shame. That would have been a huge turning point in the series.
But to agree with OP: I miss when it was still going on. Even post-timeskip. Hell, especially post-timeskip. The theories in the ongoing threads waiting for a new chapter to come out were really fun to read. The mystery is really what kept me hooked.

The writing was on the wall even before the timeskip, but the ultimate part where the writing quality does a nosedive is the start of the cringevengers arc and later on it becomes completely unsalvagable.

I think the most probable explanation is that at that point Isayama was bored, just wanted to somehow finish the story and hoped the surface level patches would be enough to hide the horrible writing from the normalfag audience who don't think too deep into it.

it was getting bad before that, but i clearly remember at that point stopping to think "what am i reading"
marley arc might have still been fun if people didn't figure out and spoil every single thing about it
