That's Japanese parenting for you. Since the mother is a busy woman who shank ghosts, she was teaching Kurenai to be a responsible big sister. This entire fire incident is suppose to serve Kurenai as a reminder so that she could grow up and be responsible. That's sounds twisted I knew, but it could've been worse, and it wasn't the mothers' intention to burn the house down, but Kurenai did.

The more direct problem for Fujita works is getting translated. Souboutei in particular even has a badass American character so it's even stranger that there has been apparently no movement towards an official English release. I wonder if there are issues with his publisher.

Storytelling-wise I think this scene is a really good way to convey how much Souboutei's mental manipulation attack is a serious threat, on a level that's nearly unblockable. All of the characters before Takoha got emotionally bitchslapped by the entity with a single blow, but even when the protagonist instant-parries the mental damage with the no-way-fag technique the entity -immediately- tries again, double downs on the intensity, and this time the protagonist barely crawls out alive. That means for everyone else it wasn't even close how much they got dunked on. It isn't easy to portray mental trauma attack as something that's a top tier threat but I find that this does the trick.
