Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Sunday (sorry for the unannounced delay) and I am gonna post the eleventh volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>279593949

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

Original title was "่ฆ‹ใˆใชใ„ใ‚ญใƒฃใƒณใƒ‡ใ‚ฃใƒผ" which can be more accurately translated as "Can't See Candy". ใ‚ญใƒฃใƒณใƒ‡ใ‚ฃใƒผ is "kyandii" so a loan word from the English word candy. Furinkan translated it as "Unsee Candy" while Google Translate gave "Invisible Candy", which seems inaccurate.

Oh and this is unrelated, but yes, Rumiko really messed up this volume cover. Ah well.

June 1st, 2011. Author's note:
"Q: Is there a secret you'd like to apologize for?
A: I have nothing to apologize for."
Furinkan's note: "In answer to this same question, mangaka Yuka Katano (of Inubu - Bokura no Shippo Senki) mentions using her cram school tuition to buy a volume of Ranma 1/2."

Oh, Furinkan has a note regarding the sign in that recap panel. Though it may apply only to the anime.

"The sign at the bottom of the candy story says "Bekkou Ame" (ในใฃ็”ฒ้ฃด). This is the name of the store that Tamako bought the candy for Sakura from. Bekkou Ame means "Bekkou Candy" with Bekkou being a proper name when written with those kanji. However the sign overhead is also read phonetically the same way, (ในใฃใ“ใ†้ฃด) which means "hard candy"."

Also, the sign here says "ๆžฏไบ•ๆˆธ" or "Dry Well". Furinkan notes that: "One remarks that there is a dry well on the property which is hinted at in the name. ๆžฏไบ•ๆˆธ literally means "dry well". When the first two kanji are read together it also become "Karei" which is a proper name."

This is explained here, but Furinkan also reminds us how to write Akuryo in Japanese: "The A-1 Grand Prix is named for "Akuryo" (ๆ‚ช้œŠ) which means "evil spirit"."

Furinkan notes that: "The samurai ghost is wearing the number 4 on his bib. Four is a particularly ominous number in Japanese because it is pronounced "shi" which is the pronunciation of "ๆญป" (death).
The boxer spirit is wearing 13, which is an equally bad number in numerology given its connections with bad luck."

Furinkan also notes that:

"Sakura finds a 100 yen coin and says she will take it to the koban (police box) in case someone is looking for it. If no one turns up she will give it to Rinne. Japan is well known for the honesty of its citizens to return found money and lost objects (phones, umbrellas and such). The total amount in 2017 of found money claimed after being turned in to the police was 75,511,670 yen ($675,813 USD). On the other hand the total amount of filed lost cash is 8,343,614,845 yen ($74,673,511 USD). The "Lost Goods Law" in Japan says that the person who has their goods and items returned is obligated to pay a reward worth between a minimum of 5% and a maximum of 20% of the item's worth."

I wonder how common it really is for someone to go to the police with a 100 Yen coin really. Not because you pocket it, but simply because who is going to stop by and say they dropped 100 Yen? Besides Rokudo, of course.

Furinkan notes that:

"One of the ghosts that pops out of the well looks like Kuidaore Taro."

They link to their page about him, which says the following:
"Kuidaore Taro (also known as Kuidaore Ningyo/Doll) is the mascot of the eight story Cui-daore restaurant in the Dotonburi district of Osaka. His name, and the name of the restaurant, is derived from the Japanese phrase "Kyou no Kidadore, Osaka no Kuidaore" (Dress (in kimonos) till you drop in Kyoto, eat till you drop in Osaka). Kuidaore Taro has become a major tourist attraction and is a national icon in Japan. In 1992 when the Hanshin Tigers were in the Central playoffs there were fears that Kuidaore Taro would be thrown off the Ebisubashi Bridge, just as the Colonel Sanders statue was in 1985."

He's #1 here with the striped clothes and the drums.

Skipped the art spacer. The original title was "ใ‚ฟใƒผใ‚ฒใƒƒใƒˆใฏๆกœ". ใ‚ฟใƒผใ‚ฒใƒƒใƒˆ is "taagetto" so, a loan word from the English word "target".

End of chapter. Furinkan has a very long note here, but I'll just post the beginning portion:
"Kurosu's frequent idea of stopping work at exactly 5 o'clock has its roots in the concept of work reform (ๅƒใๆ–นๆ”น้ฉ). The ideas were originated in the first Shinzo Abe cabinet in 2006, with the concept of the "Labor Big Bang" (ๅŠดๅƒใƒ“ใƒƒใ‚ฐใƒใƒณ) but would not fully take hold until 2018-2020 in the 3rd Abe cabinet."

Feel free to look up the three pillars of this worm reform if interested. Furinkan forgot to put ๅŠดๅƒใƒ“ใƒƒใ‚ฐใƒใƒณ in the () so I fixed that typo of theirs.

Furinkan notes that:

"Dry wells are often a part of Japanese ghost stories due to their association with the ghost story of Okiku, a woman who overheard a plot to murder her lord and warned him. When the assassin heard Okiku was responsible he stole one of the ten valuable plates that belonged to the lord and was Okiku's responsibility to clean and keep track of. Okiku ran about the castle, counting the plates, "1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7... 8... 9..." The assassin offered to reveal where the tenth plate was if she would marry him. When she refused he murdered her. Her threw her corpse in a dry well and it was said that one could still her her ghost counting up to nine as she continued to search for the missing plate."

However, they don't have a not about the sign here. I had a hunch though and it seems to be correct. This is referencing an idiom I previously had described by Furinkan: ""wash your neck and wait" (้ฆ–ๆด—ใฃใฆๅพ…ใฃใฆใ‚„ใŒใ‚Œ/kubiaratte matte yagare). This is an idiom that has the meaning "wait and see what happens" but in a literal translation it means "wash your neck" with the implication being, "because I'm coming to cut off your head."""

Yeah, neck and head are basically synonymous in this case, it seems.

The husband's face is a henohenomoheji. I don't know if this is a deliberate reference, but there is an expression in Japanese (้ดจใŒ่‘ฑใ‚’่ƒŒ่ฒ ใฃใฆๆฅใ‚‹) that translates to "Literally "the duck carries its own leek"; i.e. the duck carries the ingredients for a duck-meat dish."

49 when said as shi-ku can sound like "painful" death"
42 when read as shi-ni sounds like the word for "death" (shini)
(i should note that this is not how either "forty-two" or "forty-nine" is pronounced, this is more equivalent to saying "four two" and "four nine")
9 when said as ku can sound like agony/tortue, so they'll say kyuu instead (and they'll say yon for 4)

Here's that bit of that article. Splitting over two parts:

"I chose the last page of the three-part story "Sakura eats candy that makes spirits invisible." I chose the last page because it was the chapter with the shortest editorial meeting we ever had.

When the right subject was decided at the beginning of the meeting, Takahashi-sensei came up with ideas one after another, such as "It would be better if Sakura, for whom all spirits have become invisible, is approached by a very serious spirit," "Even if Rinne materializes, Sakura should pass by him without speaking," "He might also see her changing clothes," and so on. Takahashi-sensei came up with so many ideas to make the story flow onward. "Even though we're usually together, I feel lonely when I can't see you." "I want to see you but can't." ... All of these were delicious situations, which can only be called the royal road to romantic comedy and love stories, and she created one after the other. There was nothing for the editor to do."

Other half of the relevant portion of the article:

"This chapter was adopted as the final episode of the first season of the TV anime. Of course, it was not decided at the beginning of the project that the anime would continue until the third season. Depending on the viewer ratings, there was a possibility that it would have been a grand finale with only the first season.

This episode could have been called the "final episode of a fantastic anime." It was chosen as such a milestone episode, and that is one of the reasons why I picked it.

In the first chapter of the series, Sakura was wishfully thinking that she would be able to live a normal life as a high school student without being able to see ghosts, but in this chapter, she returns the "invisibility candy" to the spirit world and chooses to "live a life with visible spirits." She chose to continue her relationship with Rinne. I think this was the turning point in the story, and for various reasons, it is the chapter that has left the greatest impression on me.

Kyokai no RINNE 2nd editor - Masayoshi Yokoyama (ๆจชๅฑฑ็œŸ็พฉ)
Takahashi: This is one of my favorite storylines because it gave us a glimpse of Sakura's true feelings, which are not easily seen."

>volume 6 = one myew
>volume 5 and 4 = none
>volume 3 = four tiny meow meows

despite the appearance of more black cats, the amount of kitties has not increased

the romance villa's name in japanese is
>ๆตชๆผซไผš้คจ
>roman kaikan
this is the same ๆตชๆผซ as the japanese title, and is an example of using kanji for their sound rather than their meaning

it seems that the translation invented given names for the couple on the sign
>The Wedding of Tomoe Nagasaki and Seiji Kobayashi
the japanese version says
>้•ทๅดŽๅฎถ ๅฐๆž—ๅฎถ
>ๅพกไธกๅฎถ
>Nagasaki family, Kobayashi family
>ไธกๅฎถ means "both families" and ๅพก is an honorable prefix
"the honorable families of nagasaki and kobayashi" i guess?

the word for "priest" that betto uses on the next page is
>็ฅžไธป
which is for shinto priests

>kind of like an orchid blooming in a dump
this reminded me of how the lotus is looked at fondly because of the way it blooms from the mud, so i looked at the line to see what it was

the specific word for "boss" that they use for yukari is
>้คจ้•ท
this is the same ้คจ in kaikan from the villa's japanese name

bettou is ๅˆฅๅฝ“ which is the word for "groom, stableman; steward, attendant" (this does *not* seem to be the marriage "groom" btw) which has me wondering if it's even his name...
yukari calls yoshi ใŠใฃใกใ‚ƒใ‚“ (occhan), and calls the woman oba-chan
yukari is ็ธ which means "relationship, connections, fate, bonds"
keiichi is ๅœญไธ€ with the ๅœญ meaning "square jewel, corner, angle" and ไธ€ is "one"

for the old couple's wedding the word for priest used is
>็ฅž็ˆถ
which is for catholic priests (and eastern orthodox ones too)

i was curious about the excommunicated line, it was
>ๅๅนดๅ‰ใซ็ ด้–€ใ•ใ‚ŒใŸใ‚“ใงใ—ใ‚‡ใ€‚
็ ด้–€ is "excommunication" and it can apparently also be used for the expulsion of buddhist monks, but the old man calls himself a "real priest" (ๆœฌ็‰ฉใฎ็ฅž็ˆถ) so it would be excommunication from the church

>then what's up with tsubasa?
My guess is that the ability to see ghosts is heritable and that exorcists are the descendants of people who were also once lead to the afterlife and ate something from there. I imagine it's a semi-regular occurrence for children to be lured by a damashigami and then be saved by a shinigami, as was the case with Sakura. Of course, most children can't resist the prospect of trying out an exotic type of candy, and every now and then, the shinigami saving the child carelessly forgets about the side effects and ends up getting the kid something (especially since it's harder for a lot of people to deny the pleads of a child).
