>>279815003Like I said above, it's a made-up disease that works by made-up rules and which has a made-up cure that works in a made-up way which Shu wasn't taking for a made-up reason. In short, it's contrived. We're supposed to believe all of the following:
1. This is a deadly disease that kills very suddenly.
2. It can be predicted based on genetics.
3. Shu's mother died of this.
4. There is no cure, but there is a treatment.
5. The treatment doesn't work quickly.
6. The treatment may not work at all if it's taken after the disease progresses.
7. Nobody thought Shu might have the disease based on his genetics.
8. Shu himself either didn't know or didn't feel like his nosebleeds were serious.
9. Marika (Shu's friend) has the exact same disease and has seen him with nosebleeds, but neither she nor Shu suspected or said anything.
10. There is no routine medical examination at the school for astronauts, and Shu doesn't have a regular doctor who could have caught this.
11. At the space centre, nobody doing Shu's medical screening caught the disease - the tests were all too slow.
12. This space centre had no way of mitigating the lethality of the disease via infusions or any other kind of emergency treatment.
13. It either wasn't possible to transport Shu to a facility which DID have those capabilities, or the disease is completely impossible to treat in an emergency.
