Most contemporary mediums are dog shit today. That being said, manga/anime is not much further ahead. Older books and novels are still my favorite. A big reason I like manga/anime is for nostalgia too.

Hollywood demons keep America from realizing this by keeping animation juvenile if not infantile. Japan at least regards animation with some amount of respect, even if Japan at large has a lot of writing conventions I don't like

I grew up watching burger/leaf/frog/britbong cartoons on the trio of cartoon networks + PBS. "Cartoons" were always pretty ugly with the one character who was kind of cute/hot/handsome in an abstract way, and usually pure comedy or slapstick, and aimed at kids except for the ones that came on Fox, MTV, Adult Swim, and Comedy Central (which got rarer and rarer), and even those were just "comedy/slapstick, but with the parental controls turned off and wanted to make sure you knew it every 10 seconds." Pretty much all action cartoons were based off of capeshit comics or fantasy movies, and "slice of life" is the norm anyway, but that really means retarded kids/talking animals/generic everyman doing retarded things. Also, 95% of them had stories that wrapped up at the end of the episode.
Anime at least looked sexy with actual boobs and jiggle physics even if the show wasn't outright porn, and violent but not Tom and Jerry or Family Guy or He Man but actual brutal violence, and a good number of them had stories that required you pay attention episode after episode. Plus it was Japanese, and I'm not Japanese, and Japan is weird, so that's cool.
I wouldn't have cared about anime nearly as much if Amerimutts weren't ruled by autistic 40-something Christcuck moms mortally afraid of the idea of their kids they ignore most of the day seeing a cartoon on TV that acknowledged that breasts or blood exists, or if TV networks let cartoons have longer running storylines. Japan did, therefore Japan won my attention, and the burgermutts have been seething about it ever since.

I never stood a chance.
Another example is that there used to air 2 peter pan series when I was a kid.
A western cartoon and a dub of the anime peter pan anime.
I could not give less of a fuck about the cartoon, but I was always excited to see the anime and I hated that they aired the cartoon version more than than the anime version.
And this was all before I knew what anime was and all I knew about japan was that they ate sushi there.
