I liked it a lot in context. It should have been the fucking final fight of the series but that's neither here nor there.
Why is this one particular scene picked apart as much as it is? Animation has smear frames, I don't understand the problem.

Pain went completely out of character and turned into an overly animated screaming moron just so the animation director could show off "muh sakuga". It also went from a moment that was supposed to be tense with Naruto nearly going full 9-tails because of Hinata's seeming death to a cartoonish comedy with Looney Tunes running and Pain getting hammered into the ground like a nail only to ask "...do you hate me?". Acting like it wasn't terrible just because it had lots of frames is like not seeing what the issue was with the Newsong opening video.

This is easily the best fight in Shippuden and my personal fave in the entire series.
It had everything a perfect shounen battle should have: a mix of mindless action and carefully planed tactics, plethora of techniques, no asspulls, good ost, story weight and significance, good character relationship between the opponents, even the anime expanding the fight made it even better than in the manga.
But that fucking ugly ass loony tunes animation when Naruto transformed killed whatever hype and enjoyment I had of this battle.

Yeah nailed it. It helps that is one of the few Naruto fights that last a long time (one entire volume) without being hindered by flashbacks and shit. Just pure action and tactics. You get your fill of nukes with Naruto's giant Rasengans and Pain's telekinesis, then you get the tactics with all the bodies, the summons playing a part. And of course the Pain arc has some great character development and emotional weight, Jiraiya's death matter a lot.

Anime and manga are fine, the actual Pain fight has some mediocre animation in the anime before the infamous OP part but it still has solid soundtracks and stuff.

I'd advise actually playing Storm 2 personally.

I've come to appreciate this part of the anime fight a lot, the wonky animations and goofiness are perfect to convey Pain as having the ideological upper hand and just being totally smarmy and irreverent to Naruto now.
Nagato actively pursued a dialogue with Naruto and he came up with nothing in response, now he was just chimping out.
Pain's aesthetic going from 'godly' to 'looney toons' is how he's had to lower himself to this clown arena with a teenager who was given the floor and provided no solutions.

The whole fight is way too short. The Peins are too weak and Naruto is too strong. Should have been the final fight of the series too.

Naruto surrenders himself to the full nine tails power, loses his mind, gains a free powerup to break out of chibaku tensei and defeat Pain all because Minato's ghost showed up out of nowhere to give him a one-time pass to use his evil power for free with 0 consequences. This is a protagonist who never gave up unlike Nagato, Obito, Sasuke, etc. who could've avoided becoming villains if they simply believed harder btw.

For Shippuden 167, it's great out of context, but horrible in context. It's really what Gear 5 in One Piece should have been instead of spastic shit.

For the fight in general, letting Naruto own the Paths but then get stomped sucks. The whole thing would have been much better as an equal battle, then if Kishi wanted the Nine Tails to rampage he still could have had that happen.

In the end the nine tails only got Naruto out of the rods, he still had to beat Deva Path alone and clean.

I'm not sure how the fight could be changed except making the first part where he beats the Paths even longer. But if you think about it it does make sense

Not much. Yes it had some very weird moprhin/artstyle decisions at times, but the actual animation was incredible.

It's just exaggeration. That gif and >>279764006 are the only real questionable shots. Most of the other additions to the fight are great (including the extended Hinata vs Pain). It would be perfect if they just cut down on the slapstick a little bit, since this is supposed to be the serious part of the fight.

I guess it's unique in that they wanted to make the fight a spectacle. It had a lot of gravitas so the animators probably wanted to go overboard with it.

Honestly Naruto himself hadn't really had a big climactic fight since the end of part 1 Naruto so I don't hate that they tried to give him a grand animated fight after just coming off of Sasuke getting three huge fights himself and once again even after the Pain arc the only one who gets big fights for a while is once again Sasuke

Not so much, he didn't perform any worse than before. Got beaten in CQC by Sage Naruto before that, got beaten in CQC by Sage Naruto after that, but yet somehow Naruto still had to risk it all on a Rasenshuriken gamble which doesn't make much sense.
The only part that shows him being weakened is a line at the very end right before the Rasengan but he still had Shinra Tensei available every 5 seconds.

At best you could imply that maybe Deva Path would have survived the Rasengan, but who knows honestly. Pain durability is incredibly arbitrary and depends on whatever the fuck the author wants.

Not really? He just took a minute to get back into SM before going down. He can refill like that, in fact that's what he used to do with his clones before that, but he lost them during the Kyubi rampage.

Kyubi just got Naruto out of the rods, nothing more. Deva path wouldn't have used Chibaku on Naruto either. The only argument for Kyubi changing something besides giving Naruto another shot at Deva after being stabbed is that MAYBE he would have survived the Rasengan otherwise, and nothing else

The looney tunes shit with Naruto hammering Pain like a nail is hilariously retarded but then the rest of the fight is genuinely amazing with some really creative choreography using Deva Path's abilities that's never been replicated in anime ever again, so it's really a give and take.
