Honestly what's left to explain, humans are dead extra dead, and I think it's best to leave Yachiyo's realization implied and off screen at this point, because we're like 400 years a little too late on the narrative timing, and it wouldn't add much to the plot
Hell this episode didn't say anything and it showed plenty about her respect towards the lives of past humans, robots and her fear of dying herself, by simply showing you subtle face movements during the critical scenes

Let's enjoy the one time Japanese writers are subtle about something instead of lore dumping everything straight into the camera (watch me regret writing this next week)

I don't hate the tanukis like a lot of anons seem to, but the episodes that focus more on Yachiyo are much more enjoyable.

I'm talking outta my ass here, but this episode felt like Yachiyo coming to terms with humanity's death, and her own mortality. She witnessed the graveyard of humanity, indulged in human merryments one more time, and ultimately discarded all of it. At the same time, it's pretty obvious that Yachiyo herself won't live forever, and she knows it. Ultimately, Hotel Gingarou must outlive her and be inherited by Ponko's family.

I have a feeling that Ponko's diary at the end of the ending is actually a journal of her time at the hotel.

I loved the episode and I also like the tanuki. I like pretty much all the episodes of the show. It would have gotten very dull if it was 12 episodes of this as nice as it was.
I gotta I have no clue what they are going to do with the last episode. Feels like there's no way they're going to bring humans back, especially after this episode which felt like her turning the page on them.
Also it was strange to see the woodland animals gather around the fire. Not having learned to fear humans is one thing, but they wouldn't want to be near fire. Also I think builds and civilization should be in a far greater stay of decay after, what, 700 years? I can't remember. Though I asked the AI about it and it said it would take more than 10000 years to wear out or bury almost everything in the ground so who knows.

It was never directly pointed out, but I feel like a connection between Yachiyo's franticness about the dead alien last episode and Ponko wanting her to take a break could be made. Sure, this episode could be after another big timeskip, but between that potentially being a sign of her potentially acting similarly in days between these episodes, and her having a severely degraded microchip, I think it seems reasonable enough.

I swear that this is the first time I've ever seen an anime acknowledge that civets (specifically masked palm civets, called 白鼻心) are fairly common in Japan. Yay?

(I lived in Japan three years before I happened to spot a civet at night on a mountain road in Shikoku, and thought, "what the fuck is that?" People just told me, "oh, yeah, those are a thing." Until that moment I had genuinely thought I was thoroughly familiar with all the Japanese fauna. I somehow felt betrayed.)

PS: Before I forget, it seems like people in this thread may be pleased to know that this same mountain road was, in most seasons of the year, practically carpeted with road-killed tanuki. I only saw a living tanuki on that stretch two or three times, and once, I hit the damn thing. I felt bad, but it was that or risk flying off the switchback, and I decided that my life was more important than that of an animal that had decided to leap out in front of car headlights.

Incredible episode. I got really emotional when Ponko and her daughter welcomed the guest before Yachiyo had a chance too. Showing her growth and becoming more "human" and "living" is just wonderful. The hotel that she fought for and sustained now being able to be ran entirely by the next generation, and the generation after and after. I struggle to put it into words but it gets me quite emotional. We're all gonna die someday, and all we can do is hope to give the next generation what we had, and I think Yachiyo should be really proud of what she's done to keep the hotel alive.

This episode was good, but not just because it was Yachiyo walking around a post apocalyptic earth, but because it was that in contrast to the very wild tone the series has had since the Tanukians came along. If the whole series was just this kind of tone but with an alien or two showing up and staying at the hotel is wouldn't have been as effective. The antics in previous episodes distracts you somewhat from the core premise and this episode takes a moment to remind you what it is just before whatever is to come in episode 12.

tl;dr this episode works best because of the Tanukis.

Agreed. Even the "pegasus" moment at the end was like a tender nudge back to the silly antics of the show. If it weren't for the tanukis, or any other guest it doesn't matter who, telling Yachiyo to take a break she would've ended in that pile of broken hotel robots eventually without the opportunity to explore the decayed world around her. However, I never felt she was a slave to the hotel at any point despite being programmed to be a servant. So after everything that happened to her revolving around the hotel, it was cathartic seeing Yachiyo return in high spirits after centuries of serving the hotel and maintaining the vision of its owner.

I like the hectic shenanigans of the furballs and Yachiyo doing hotel things by herself without the help of the furballs but this entire episode was a treat and it's a great way to start wrapping up everything that has occurred. The music, the scenery, the end of humanity, Yachiyo simply wandering around and looking for repairs, her cute robot noises, her funny-looking functions and just the serenity of it all made it the best episode to me.

Great episode, my favorite so far though i also loved the more ludicrous ones exploring other genres. It also had capybaras at the bathhouse which is always a plus for me.

My only, it´s not exactly a complaint, more of an observation... i kind of find strange how resilient everything is considering it´s been thousands of years since the end of human civilization. The gorgeous backgrounds are definitely a costly time sink, but there's less dialog and somewhat less complex animation. I assume the episode overall costs more to produce like maybe 50% or 100% more, but I really don't know for sure, maybe it's 200%, or maybe it costs less? I don't think voice actors are paid all that much so saving on dialogue probably shouldn't skip that much money.
