Basically feels like an intended microcosm of the show. Everyone's got grand schemes calling back to the old UC, and then this one random deb keeps chasing a little excitement and a boy she likes, tossing everything into disarray. I REALLY wanted to give a shit about the main trio, but it's hard when the show from the start was already doing so much. I think there's tons of potential to have a "Cold War" type of story focused on kids having to deal in living in a world that's constantly on the brink of destruction, but the show's too goddamn nerdy to properly focus on that without the main trio feeling overshadowed by it all. Obviously Machu/Nyaan have developed as characters but at the end of the day they're still gears in a much larger machine so it's hard for me to care. Even though I legit want to. I have tried other shows spearheaded by them but looking at what they have done beyond sailor moon I haven't liked any of them. Eva and fclc are on actually some of my most disliked series and this show despite enjoying it really shows me why I dislike the other ones. They all have this same vibe to them. That's not to say I don't enjoy gcucks but it's as you said pretty tiring now. Without these threads and other anons explaining things from previous series I doing I would find enjoyment and skip a lot of scenes.

As for the show itself I thought I would also like the main trio somewhat but they're almost reluctant to give any of the girls a proper personality out of their crush. You see with machu and the slight inclination to being friends with lalah but then she going right back to ritual screaming. While the dual timelines plot is and can be an interesting plot line it's not really written as such. I think it would have been interesting to explore a world influenced by lalah and speak to her own self multiple times. They packed so much into the series without regard of trying to explore any of them. On one hand at least people will be able to explore it in fan work but I feel like they should have touched upon quite a few things during the series.
And one of the reasons I really liked chalia is specifically because he seems to be one of the only characters worth exploring. He's one of the only characters who get a fully flushed out backstory plus you see him actually doing things to further the plot. they generally seem to give him a lot of charisma. If he ended up being the main villain in the end it actually would have been a lot better because we see him a lot and are familiar with some of the ways that he acts. I just felt like there was a lot of potential for anything else and they squandered it.

What the original Eva and original FLCL did correctly, that GQuacks is failing at, was keeping the focus on the characters. Eva didn't bother spoonfeeding you all the details about angels and stuff because it didn't really matter. Making you see Shinji's struggle and trauma was the important bit. Similar thing with Naota in FLCL. All the alien fluff was there, but at its core it was a coming of age story that was executed well. GQuacks threw a main trio at us but basically failed to develop them meaningfully. Shuji has almost no personality which is a huge mistake for someone that is the center focus and motivation for the other two. We see none of the usual "coming-of-age/growing up" development for Machu. In fact, it even happens off screen to some extent with her training with Chalia. Honestly, I find Nyaan the best executed character out of all them but even still it feels rushed, especially her relationship with Kycillia. This really just needed more episodes to tell the story it wanted to tell. At least another cour. They really should have condensed and cut more material to make the 12 episodes work better.

I was trying to read through some nip arguments on why he's a good character and the only thing I could take away from it was 'he's slightly kind to machu instead of being a dick (like a normal person would nice) and his face card is 10/10" those are not reasons to have two girls lust after him and make him the center of the plot. Her Gelgoog, equipped with the "new" magnetic coating, ran circles around the Red Gundam and Shuji completely. Machu and the GQuuuuuuX was completely outclassed. And the reason she lost is because the Gelgoog's arm broke, snapping her out of her battle trance.

So here we have the RX-78-02, presumably equipped with magnetic coating and its expensive, experimental luna titanium, with either Shuji or Amuro in the cockpit, ready to kick Zeon-produced MS heads in. Amuro at the end of the OYW in the Gundam matched with Char in the Zeong, and that thing was a psycommu-equipped advanced mobile armor.

So the RX-78-02 is still competitive, but HOW competitive depends on who's at the controls.

The show has made a concerted effort to make him come off as terrifying. I think he's less malicious and more just irresponsible. He's essentially this world's Quattro. A hasbeen failure who's pinned all his hopes and dreams onto the first 'pure' newtype he ran across. He might be facing down evil(Kycilia is in Haman's place here), but he is making the situation worse by not stopping and thinking.

As a note, his idea of freedom is death and detachment.
