There is a part of me that thinks both their problems could be solved if they both had someone else to take care of. Parenthood changes people, we've all seen that. Not always for the better, but sometimes. Completely agree. They both unknowingly share the same trauma of a lost/distant parents which is why Misato is so desperate to be a mother to Shinji.
