There is a part of me that thinks both their problems could be solved if they both had someone else to take care of. Parenthood changes people, we've all seen that. Not always for the better, but sometimes. Maybe having something small that depended on them, the two of them together, would get Shinji and Misato out of their own heads a little, and force them to come to terms with the world as it is, rather than wallowing in their own self-pity and fantasies.

Completely agree. They both unknowingly share the same trauma of a lost/distant parents which is why Misato is so desperate to be a mother to Shinji. But she really needs a means to move past all the trauma and focus on the future and Shinji needs something obvious and direct that needs his love and protection, instead of constant ambiguity that leaves him with indecision and inaction.
