I'm glad this exists. If this came out a decade ago I would be all for it. But now I'm so disconnected with the series due to all of the western comic wank. Plus, it looks like kodomo stuff, so I don't think I'll follow it too closely. But for a first chapter, it was a good read. It's clear the writer is an actual fan of the series, and not trying to push an agenda to make the series what it isn't.

Japanese Sonic is too independent and free to have meaningful development on his own. Western Sonic is defined by his immaturity, impatience and lack of forethought, but the issue with a character who is designed to persist indefinitely is that he's either not allowed to grow out of his flaws (because then he wouldn't have anymore flaws to grow out of) or he's just learning the same life lessons over and over and over. Japanese Sonic kinda just throws the issue out by making Sonic a free, independent paragon who others look out to.

Most of it is because the idw comics have been really lame lately, focusing on the crying lesbians instead of the game cast, and when they do get focus, it's mostly boring nothingburger. Sonic should be cool, and for a comic/manga medium, this is a breath of fresh air.

The key to making Sonic good is to have a sidekick for him who's only met him for the first time. The problem with a lot of Sonic's other friends is that they're all used to him. They know what he's about. So inevitably, pretty much all of them devolve into "Yeah, that sounds like Sonic alright!" or "It's Sonic, he's got this!" Even Eggman's the same. Eggman's been around Sonic the longest. He knows exactly what to expect from him.

This is why a lot of Sonic's best characterizations come from his interactions with one-offs. Erazor Djinn's mounting frustrations with Sonic was what makes their interactions so fun.

I've always chalked it up to relatable escapism. Making the fantastic creature that doesn't exist in our world be on good terms with someone who's just as normal as you or I endears them and makes it possible to relate to them as the viewer.

The games almost never do this and whenever they have it's been met with sound rejection, by and large, so it really only has ever sufficed in supplementary Sonic media.

Sonic Adventure's original lighting was really ambitious and dynamic, it's a shame they had to downgrade it before launch

In the Tokyo International Forum, you can see the Ninja Lights system in action. Dynamic shadows, lights and other effects that aren’t seen in the final game.

The final game removed most of the Ninja Lights system, but some of it is still leftover. Some objects like the TVs still use Ninja Lighting.

The Dreamcast had the ability to perform what was called Order Independent Transparency which SA2 used extensively for things such as item balloons and artificial chaos. When SA2 and SA1 was ported to Gamecube, many of the transparency features that the Dreamcast had couldn't be replicated and they were never fixed for the PC port.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were extremely ambitious. Sonic Adventure 2 is a much, much, much more robust game internally than SA1. I cannot stress that enough. It is much more flexible in every conceivable way, and it is really impressive how much Sonic Team improved on in such a short time frame. But it is still obviously based on SA1 and shares a lot of infrastructure, albeit greatly improved

Sonic fights to protect nature from the greed of evil men, while Chaos' reasons for being evil stem entirely from that very same viewpoint. You also have the fact that Sonic in SA1 is powered by the world's hope, while Perfect Chaos is powered by his hatred and his alone. Open Your Heart is basically Sonic talking about how him and Chaos aren't that different from each other.

Shadow is, meanwhile, a more straightforward but still deep parallel. Sonic's entire character is about living free from all restraints and duties. Shadow, meanwhile, is trapped by his own self-thought duty to fulfill Maria's dream, while at the same time merely being used by Gerald to kill everyone. It Doesn't Matter specifies that Sonic doesn't care about the past, while Shadow in SA2 lives almost entirely in it. Sonic knows who he is and never doubts himself, while the latter half of SA2's Dark Story is Shadow coming to terms with the fact that his memories may be fake. Live and Learn by comparison to Open Your Heart is basically Sonic telling Shadow to live life to the fullest and for HIMSELF rather than Gerald, Maria or anyone else.

Neo Metal Sonic is a parallel of fakes being able to surpass the original and has data derived from the entire cast of Sonic Heroes and Perfect Chaos

Wouldn't go that far, but genuinely, no; that poster has a point. Prior to post Penders Archie hitting it's stride, Fleetway was the most consistent side material out there. Faithful and taking from what material there was, yet fitting in unique concepts and interpretations that still flowed well. Honest to god I have no idea how they did it, but it's not even fair to compare Fleetway in the 90's with Archie in the 90's. They're simply unequivocally better.

That was the initial plan after Ian shat on the other girls (besides Blaze) until he decided to bank on forcing her to be with Whisper as the new OC duo without realizing how detrimental it would get for Tangle's character by making her primarily Whisper's tissue paper and nothing else.
