I've read the whole thing. I dunno how to feel about it because I can't tell if it's just using European history as a cover to be edgy or if the author is being genuine about trying to portray the violence of the time as violence.
I kinda want to get the full set someday. I know the full English volume is out there somewhere.

I think the manga is pretty genuine as a whole. It portrays the brutality of the period well enough and it is based on some real events. There is definitely some edginess though, but I don't think it detracts from the enjoyment of the series.

Kinda. There was indeed a movement by rebellous cantons to overthrow the influence of the habsburg and for the right to self-govern (meaning, they don't have to pay taxes to any Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire), which would lead to the formation of the swiss confederacy.
It would lead to a very famous battle, where the rebellous mountain peasants (plus their mercenaries) would triumph over the much larger knight army of the habsburgians.
As far as I can tell, the manga series is taking that feud as the basis of the story.

Now that I'm rereading this, I don't recall any other manga that has the POV from the fugitive princess/heiress and her ward much less with romantic undertones, and it's sad that this example had to end this way.
