Aka absorbs & mimics, Kuro extends his range and Nishiki boosts hist stats up to the point he can go toe to toe with monsters. The White Purity Iai Style is literally among the most known martial arts styles, and it allows you to effectively buff yourself (maybe not to the extent of a trained sorcerer, that's not been made clear), because you use Ki for that (which is something *ALL* humans have, even if not everyone utilizes or trains it). There's nothing explicitly stating that the mooks can't use any Ki or anything like that.
