The author/main character and the crossbow lady should have just acknowledged his redemption as completed with him not killing for personal gain and revenge anymore and moved on or end the series after the slave arc altogether. If I remember correctly it even shows his philosophy failing constantly at resolving conflicts in the later part of the series, like what's the point of constantly watching a shounen retard failing in a realistic world in a non funny way. I must be psychic because I started to re-read Vinland Saga a couple days ago. I gave up on the series shortly after the Baltic Sea arc ended because it was just so unsatisfying after sticking around for all those years. Thorfinn's idea of pacifism is retarded when he's faced with so much shit, Hild was a completely unnecessary addition since the story just treated her as an explicit consequence to Thorfinn betraying his new ideals, and Garm was some Baki-tier edgelord character just thrown in for no reason. Not to mention the handling of Floki didn't feel like the culmination of his own schemes blowing up in his face since all his failures came from Garm killing one guy and pissing off Thorkell.

I've heard smatterings of what's been going on since then and my re-read is already stalling out once again in the Baltic seas. I just remember the interview where the author admits he's changed as a person and so have his values. Maybe it would have been better to end the story earlier rather than continue to make Thorfinn a complete moron.

We knew as much in the opening chapters. The only thing we gained was teh idea that Floki lied to Akeladd about the Jorms wanting Thors dead because they truly didn't know he was still alive until recently, save for Thorkell.

But other than that, it's just bullshit that he got to live. I don't care that Thorfinn didn't do the deed since I do think his father would have wanted him to spare Floki's life even in that situation. What I hate is that Floki didn't instead get taken out by Canute or even Thorkell because the former would just want to remove a political obstacle and the Latter was Thor's relation and battle brother. Just do some batman shit where Thorfinn gets to keep his hands clean and Floki gets to suffer for his constant machinations and scheming from someone better than him or someone that just doesn't care.

Off course Thorfinn would fail. His ideas were fundamentally wrong to begin with and he is still running from his past. He never managed to truly own it and because of that war caught with him again. Had he accepted who he was and what he had done he would have been able to show Ivar and the rest he was no coward, this would have prevented divisive opinions and everyone would have accepted Thorfinn´s proposal to leave. There would have been no war.

Peace can only be achieved through martial might. One must let neighbors know that engaging in war is less beneficial than coexistence. It may sound counter intuitive but only then discussion can be favored over violence.
