How did people ever not understand this anime? It's themes are pretty apparent and the philosophy is intro level. Are they just high school teens who don't get it, or is the general populace that stupid?

It's a fairly miserable setting and since the very start most people watch anime to get away from existential misery.

The theme of it is sort of spiritual in nature. The relation of ego and higher self. That gets into a metaphysical and ineffable territory of experience, one that most npc/hylic types don't even realize is there with them.

Also what they explicitly discuss is straight forward, but there are also various unspoken themes and references that point to deeper philosophy that isn't nessecarily easily penetrable, but adds to the overall messaging. The best example being deleuze and guattari getting name dropped.

The problem is the pacing

This. Almost fell asleep with all the episodes dedicated to practically spelling things out for the audience.

I really like this one, setting, idea, characters and the general positive message of it really won me over, but it does have severe pacing problem.
You really need to be invested to even want to finish it

Back then I hated the pacing but these days I honestly like it. Everything else is too hectic now and there's no breathing room to think or show things in a slow manner.
