Spitballing here, but it feels like there's a bit of discouragement seeing that the robot girl reality that's upon us is underwhelming enough to severely impair the hype. Granted, it's always the problem of comparing fiction to reality, but there's still the reality of trying to make it a reality and all the opposition to it laying in wait.

It's strange. Something about Alpha just causes the heart to race, and not in the 'i want to fuck this' kind of way. I look at her, and it just soothes the soul; makes things feel like things aren't so bad. Especially that chapter that's essentially a first-person POV visit to Alpha's cafe. There's just a warmth to her that I just can't put into words.

I finished reading this recently. Rather unintentionally it ended up taking me over a year to read it. I would just read the odd chapter or two here and there, and then leave it for a few weeks before picking it up again. I feel like doing so helped emphasise the passage of time between certain chapters. When Takahiro or Makki suddenly aged by several years it would hit me like a pallet of bricks.

I'd like to do a binge read at some point though since I think I'd be more likely to notice details across chapters that way. I'm curious whether anyone has had a similar experience taking a long time to read a manga (excluding ones that are still releasing of course) and how it impacted your impression of it?

For the final two chapters I decided to take a trip to the coast. Reading them while sat in the dunes with the wind breezing by felt very appropriate.

>I'm curious whether anyone has had a similar experience taking a long time to read a manga (excluding ones that are still releasing of course) and how it impacted your impression of it?
I wouldn't necessarily take a year or so but usually I read manga around real life moments, for instance I read YKK during summer vacations each night and it really made it something I'd remember for a much longer time, I can still picture the return trip on the boat and reading some nice chapters during this.
I ended up finishing it and finding the final chapter very soothing and a much needed salvation for Alpha's character. Went for a swim right after it to think about it and it's still one of my favorite media experiences ever.

Daily Hidamari Sketch on each morning routine was also quite a treat and it lasted for a few months too. I very much recommend that kind of pacing.

And I guess reading Ten during some of the most challenging parts of my studies helped me stay collected and stand my ground. I remember reading some of the most competitive parts when I had to take flights on a very short notice for final examinations, I could definitely resonate with the gambles as I went forward

Interesting, I wonder if that's why following daily threads is so appealing. I guess that kind of pace gives you the time to digest each chapter but ensures you're reading them frequently enough to keep the manga in your thoughts.

For me part of the appeal is that you're incorporating the aesthetic of what you're enjoying into your daily life and mood. At the very least it gets your thoughts flowing in a given direction. Dailies truly are man's finest invention.

YKK is one of the few series to get robots right by making them emotional creatures first and foremost. For decades people frequently get the fictional imaginings of robots wrong. "They're coldly rational creations with no emotion, we have to figure out how to build emotions into them!" This is completely backwards. Existential micronarrative, and the emotion it engenders, comes first, as no intellect can exist without an a priori framework that it is "good" (an overly simple yet extremely important term) to behave in a manner that is consistent with one's perceptions of reality and to maintain an updating catalog of these perceptions. Without the unconscious emotional impetus to classify the hierarchical value of perceptions and rank order them according to probability and integrity, there can be no logical qualifying force to direct the physical form into the conscious moving towards a goal consistent with these present perceptions and the relative value ("goodness") of predicted future outcomes.

I'd like to remind everyone that there's supposedly some grim, somewhat-canon novel about Alpha being turned off in the cafe post-series, and it hasn't been translated yet...

>>279844836
Ashinano has an interesting take on AI, since humanity has pretty much accepted its fate of extinction, the robots are 'programmed' to find a purpose for themselves. They've got a human 'consciousness' but they don't have a human 'context', which is pretty cool. It makes Alpha unique by making her take on hobbies like playing the ukelele or riding her motorbike around. Like she's experimenting instead of living through a perceived outcome.
