"Christmas cake" is quite an old expression. It was most popular in the 80's and was already falling out of use by the late 90's. On a Yahoo questions board in 2008, a Japanese user wondered what it means, and was given an answer that it is a dead slang. And yet we, the anons, keep using it to this day.
In a cosmic ironic kind of way, the word "christmas cake" itself has turned into a christmas cake, and we're the only ones willing to eat it in this day and age.

4chan keeps dead phrases alive.
It's site culture, to never let anything go and dwell in yesteryear.
Just look at "based", for example.
The reason it's so prevalent in todays culture is because of this site.
Yes a black rapper invented it, but the site kept it alive until it's eventual resurrection.

A lot of internet slang has fallen out of use and been replaced with other words and phrases. Both in the Japanese internet and the international English speaking world.
My favorite example is how "epic" and "fail" have been replaced by "based" and "cringe" to be honest.

Hell I still remember when people used "fad" for short lived (obviously) internet jokes, think dr house dances videos or whatever, or even simpler the word "joke". Now days everything and everyone is a "meme" for some damn reason.
You could also talk about l33t speak in its entirety but that one dying out isn't a big surprised, it's always been pretty niche anyway.
Anonymous No.279837597 [Report] >>279837670
>>279837418
Makes sense, fad was a pre-existing term co-opted, while meme is exclusively online. Fad was merely born from growing pains of the internet not really having developed its own thing yet and having to adopt existing words, once its own culture developed further it got its own more specific exclusive terminology.

So was the word "meme", a lot of people probably having first heard of it in MGS2.
>while meme is exclusively online
Now days for sure, not originally, however.
>once its own culture developed further it got its own more specific exclusive terminology.
A FUCK TON of things are still nothing but fads, hence the whole "forced meme" garbage people throw out sometimes. Fad is still a very useful word these days, not everything has to be called a goddamn "meme" all the damn time, even when it isn't anything of the sorts to begin with.
Hell, things got so bad that people started using meme as a personal insult. So instead of going "You're such a joke dude" they use meme instead, it's so stupid.

It originally meant a mythological creature didn't it? Maybe when people began using it as an insult for old people others accused them of being "ironic". Words often shift in meaning.

>So was the word "meme", a lot of people probably having first heard of it in MGS2.
As a Jungian, I laff. Especially at Dawkins fanboys.
There's a pollution pipeline and we need to get more consistent about naming it.
It goes as follows:
banter --> inside joke --> fad --> meme --> shitposting template --> cancer
Related terms:
"image macro" (any of the above in the form of a pic with funny words)
"buzzword" (overused word with no definition)
"kamfbegriff" (idem, but politically motivated, which is grounds for execution) (describes at least a third of all current activity on the 5 biggest boards for the past 10 years) (don't worry, most of them are bots, most bloodshed will be cooling liquid)
Anonymous No.279838065 [Report] >>279838790
>>279837670
Its not in MGS2 at all
I remember when I played it expecting to see the meme scene but it was a lie.

Yes, but I'm saying the word fad is used for events offline, and even pre-internet, meme is used exclusively for online and at the very least post internet events. Yes there's some overlap in their meaning, but they are still different words.

Honestly if there one thing I came to realize about slang is that it almost always has an actual reason for existing. Even if you think two words are the same there's usually a connotation one has that the other doesn't, something that makes one more appropriate to use in a certain context than another, something that makes it either more generalized or more specific. It's pretty interesting
Anonymous No.279838790 [Report] >>279839177 >>279840546

It certainly was one use of the word, but that was REAL long ago to be fair, nothing modern day, at least outside of cultures where this creature exists.
>Words often shift in meaning.
I obviously get that and it's fine, but it's still annoying to see how the meaning of certain things change for whatever reason.
Not related, but reminds me of the usage of "fag" or "faggot", may it be the original meaning or how the brits use it.

>>279837931
>banter --> inside joke --> fad --> meme --> shitposting template --> cancer
I'm not 100% sure 'bout that one, at least for teh first two parts of it. Banter and inside jokes are purely personal, a private matter. Fads and memes meanwhile are very public leaning, if you get what I'm going for here.
>overused word with no definition
While I'm sick of that word, I'm equally sick of all the nu-term bullshit, creating a need of sorts of the term "buzzword". It's all "cancer" as you mentioned.
>kamfbegriff
Not once heard of this one, likely for the better.

What are you talking about? It's all over the game, especially the ending? Kojimbo himself even describes the game's theme to be "memes", which is pretty clear when looking at the dialogue where they specifically mention and directly use the word.
>meme is used exclusively for online
meme is being used in real life by the same retards that STILL say "lol" out loud in public, in real life context for real life events. The word of the meaning has changed due to this normalization
>almost always has an actual reason for existing
I mean, duh. Every single stereotype has a reason to exist as well, there is always a bit (or a lot) of truth behind every single one of them.
>It's pretty interesting
To be fair, just about anything is interesting, especially on a psychology level (for me). The issue is that a lot of these things can also be extremely annoying if no damaging.

You're really underestimating how influential America is. Even if we don't use certain American terms everyone is still familiar with them. No one would use faggot for any of its original meanings, it's now just used as an insult for homosexuals here. Something very funny is that the coloured people in London are now calling the police "feds" in imitation of black gangs in America. The UK does not have any law enforcement organization with "federal" (or any variation of that word) in its name. This country is a joke.

you got duped bro
The memes speech and everything is from metal gear rising, which came out in 2013. Maybe in mgs4 too. The word meme is not uttered once in metal gear solid 2. Wasn't a thing at all. I dunno if kojima retroactively applied the word to the game or if he really did have memes in thought when he made it but he didn't tell us it was a meme game at the time.

Doing a quick double check, seems you're right about MGS2. They never mention the word by name, but the whole game is absolutely about the topic or theme of what the word "meme" originally stood for, before the internet absolutely murdered said meaning.
>The term "meme" was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene", applying natural selection to cultural values and customs, passed (or lost) from one generation to the next (like genes).
>A meme is about what we pass down to the next generation through our culture and history. It could be through music, movies icons, social movements, and the like.
