I know an old guy who doesn't have a computer, doesn't use the internet and he can barely interact with society. He doesn't exist. Lain treats the fact the internet will generate a dissociation between your real life self and online self. It predicted the fact a lot of people would eventually live entirely within the internet and in a sense, the concept of living would become ambiguous. Our 2 personas could intereact with one another but both would evolve in 2 totally different realm and in the end if you succomb deep enough to it, your internet persona would take over your real persona and you'd live only through the prisma of the internet.
It takes heavy inspiration from Baudrillard simulacras and simulations.
