Goku being a country bumpkin who pummels foes made him more memorable than the run of the mill martial artists. He also grew up, had a child, became a grandpa with Super Ojisan powers rather than stay in his lane. In a genre that's becoming infantile because animators can't draw fight scenes, Goku's refreshing.

Joe would doesn't know what aliens are. He would beat up Vegeta, Freiza, King Piccolo for being whiny and not building themselves as a hungry champion. I can only see him tolerating Tien, Yamcha, Raditz and Nappa at best. I don't think Danpei would be keen on aliens cause they do too much fancy tricks

It was the swansong to macho leads in battle shonen. The 80's were full of manga exactly like it, it's just when HnK came out none of them could stand against it and it basically became the pinnacle other series would copy for decades when doing a "serious" battle manga.
It was the refined work of the previous decade of battle manga.
Dragon ball got popular because it was the antithesis of HnK.

Mercenary Tao killed the idea of muscle men. He started the trend of sissy villains beating the masculine heroes with his flexes. Master Roshi also beat Goku so that he didn't get cocky, it's just that a cocky Goku and Yamcha are so charismatic that they roll off the villains even when losing.
