Damn, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is still such an awesome movie.
That's it. That's the thread. Just letting you know.

What sparked the sudden interest not so long ago? I don't see any new release.

i watched this the other day, were charlotte and the nobel being manipulated by bathory from the beginning? because she feels like a bit of a deus ex machina

Yeah they're ok, kinda bloated, or at least the first couple were. Mostly the world ia unique and wild enough to make the constant diversions less grating but they're not particularly well written or anything. Worth checking out to see if they vibe with you.

One of those movies that’s kind of style over substance but the style is so good you wouldn’t be able to really tell.

I watched both movies for the first time this year, and while I enjoyed Vampire Hunter D, Bloodlust is overall, a far better film. It has so much artistry behind it. It's a moving painting.

That 20th century OVA look is still the peak of Japanese animation.

Bloodlust is one of the VERY few anime movies that is actually good as a whole package. It's not "just" animation, but rather it actually has interesting characters and a solid story while ALSO looking gorgeous.
I wish more anime movies were able to avoid the curse of Japanese writing like it does.

This. I hate how people say the movie lacks substance or depth/it’s just subtle with it, like most media should be.

Last October, I rewatched the 85 movie and Bloodlust for the first time. I was blown away by how the movie looked but the story was pretty good too.

Can someone explain me, why the antagonist is translated as Meyer-Link, despite being literally spelled Meierling in the movie?

Unmatched in visuals for gothic horror, animation where every frame is itself a work of art and it keeps going the whole way, a badass protagonist and memorable characters to boot. It's great.

Honestly would be better if the story itself wasn't random jarring nonsense with sudden out of nowhere changes with no leadin' and what may be the one of the most unmemorable final villains in a long while. It's GORGEOUS but it's not a good story

I think a lot of people gloss over the entire ending act where they arrive at the castle to the much better and more heartfelt final confrontation between the two leads, brief as it was, just because Carmilla is genuinely awful as a means to force the plot along and makes no sense in the story, but is needed to wrap up the actual antagonists that had been present throughout the movie even if in an unsatisfying way.

Then there's the fucking spaceship.

Amano's style is unadaptable in current year
But I've always dreamed of a full Vampire Hunter D anime done entirely in his style
Hopefully someone will take the job to do it

Non-Japanese text in anime can never be taken as 100% correct.
They misspell words all the time.

I've been keeping up with it on AsaComi, it's pretty great. Hoping for an English release once it's finished.

>>279868600
Probably because of how it's spelt and pronounced in Japanese. Same reason we got "dunpeal" instead of dhampir.

In Bloodlust's case the letter isn't entirely off. Meier in the book was called Mayerling, a village in Austria where a somewhat infamous prince was buried. Quite a few characters throughout the series are named after real places or other literature and media that Hideyuki Kikuchi liked - Llarmica is an anagram of Carmilla, Miska is derived from Miskatonic University, and Baron Meinster is straight from Hammer's The Brides of Dracula.

It should be mentioned that the movie expanded a lot on the story it was based on, such that Carmilla wasn't even there to begin with. It also took out a part involving incest, which paints some things in a different light.

This is one of those movies, like Akira or REDLINE, that really shines on a cinema screen. A shame anime movies are rarely in those cinema feature nights.

Most of the animators that worked on vampire hunter D are still working and have done far better things.
