You know, after reading Naruto again after a decade of reading modern mangaslop, pre-Shippuden Naruto truly was a masterpiece of battle shounen, mostly because Kishi kept things simple. Shippuden was a clusterfuck of asspulls x retcons x backstories since Kishi wanted to expand the world too much, but did have some good points such as the Pain arc. And as much of a slog the ninja war was, it was written for the shounen readers that wanted to see all the tons of jutsu they never would have seen otherwise.
