Gundam Wing is such a funny anime.
The writing can be hot garbage, but it happened to be at the right place, at the right time, so it got that international fandom via Cartoon Network.

I'm currently watching the original Urusei Yatsura series, one episode a day, and I'm really enjoying it. I feel like the beginning was the weakest part, but once they dropped the two-stories-per-episode format, the show found its footing. The characters became more rounded, the jokes started to land, and the animation became more consistent.

I don't think Cyberteam in Akihabara is actually aimed at little girls. The entire thing feels like it was made for/by magical girl otaku.

Especially towards the climax with the fucking post-Eva psychological/religious shit, constantly quoting the Bible, and references to real world esoteric cults and secret Masonic organizations.
And I vaguely remember one of the villain's deaths being excessively bloody and gorey.

I did the same as you. But I really struggled to keep going with it. Then suddenly about 2/3 into the show, there's one season where everything became crazy good. The writing, the animation, they actually started giving characters development and arcs, etc. Then when that season ended, it just stopped and went back to the old formula. It's very strange. It's like an entirely new team took over the show for just one season. And everything was similar in tone and writing to Beautiful Dreamer.

It's very possible that it wasn't aimed at kids. Since it had some of the people who worked on Nuku Nuku and Nadesico working on it. Those series were okay for kids, but clearly more for teenage/adult otakus. There was also a lot of stuff coming out at this time which was trying to subvert genre norms.

Japanese shows "for kids" tend to have some of the most controversial content. Kids can talk about sex and show off their junk. But then when the show is aimed at teenagers, suddenly all of that is taboo. And holding hands is deemed too far.

You are both very wrong.
The early episodes are some of the best parts. There's more of a focus on the character of the wreks which gives you great character episodes like Karasu, Yuki, and Ran.
The series gets weak when it starts to follow the main four love square and just lampshades popular events at the time.
The series picks this back up at certain points throughout the series, but the tight ten minute half episode format keeps the plot moving quick, whereas you can really see the twenty minute episodes start to drag when they have no good B-plot.
Furthermore, 2/3rds (or by my estimation, halfway through the series) there's a lull of truly awful episodes. The fox episodes? The cherry blossom play episode? Sakura's dream episode? The motherfucking snow man episode? They are disjointed, long, dry, and not funny at all.
Of course, things get better near the end as Rumiko starts to remember various fun characters she made like Karasu and the JC delinquent space girls.

I love Akazukin Chacha but Akazukin Chacha and Cyberteam in Akihabara are not remotely similar in tone or presentation at all.

Akazukin Chacha having an episode depicting drunk babies, or having an episode making fun of crossdressers/"trannies" isn't remotely the same as where Cyberteam in Akihabara went. Cyberteam in Akihabara isn't even "mature" or "controversial", the direction the show goes in is moreso what you'd expect to see out of an edgier shonen, a late night post-Eva TV series, or the numerous word salad techno-babble OVAs that dominated the 90s; As in, a male audience, teenage or adult.

I didn't mean Chacha was pushing the boundaries so much. Though there's a few lewd jokes. Other stuff like Enma-kun or Shin Chan or some post 2000 shows like Mitsudomoe sure did. And these are all shows aimed at kindergartners.

>They are disjointed, long, dry, and not funny at all.
This is how I felt about the early episodes. Many of them felt like fever dreams of disjointed events. Especially the ones where Ataru is taken to another planet or the episodes where they parody folk tales/samurai soap operas (which is like every other episode for a couple seasons).

Having said that, the appeal of the show to a lot of people is the absurdist/off the wall style of humor. And episodes where they purposefully don't have a conclusion. And it's just not my kind of thing. This is why when the show started focusing more on character arcs and more traditional plots for that one season, I really liked it. But I understand why so many fans of the show ended up not liking these episodes and movies like Beautiful Dreamer. I probably would have never watched the show if I had just started the show. But I ended up seeing Beautiful Dreamer first and so I went in hoping for more like that. And I got it. But only sparatically across the show. Like 1-2 episodes every season or so. And then that one season where almost every episode was like it. So of course I liked those ones the most.

You ever wonder why some anime get stuck in LaserDisc limbo?

Here's Kero Kero Chime from 1997. A quasi mahou shojo anime based on a manga that was printed on Ribon. Normal boy gets a spell put on him that transforms him into a frog whenever he touches water, then he is transported to an alternative world to meet a frog princess. I can't really say this is a great anime, the animation veers more on the low budget side, but it has such a cute style and nostalgic vibe throughout the entire thing that I found it pleasing to watch. Even the opening is really catchy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUIOlntfMDk

But this anime is so obscure. The weirdest thing is that both the anime and manga have been translated thanks to a translation team from 2001. Its funny, there are tons of more popular shoujo anime that haven't gotten any subs to this day, yet this really obscure one did. Unfortunately, the rip they used cut out the title card and end preview, and are not the best quality.

Also, it seems Kero Kero Chime only got a LD release in the late 90s, and there has never been another new release since.
Anonymous No.279871980 [Report]

Probably the company just didn't think the LD or manga sold enough to meet their popularity threshold. Many such cases. It's sad, but a reality of the market.

Anonymous No.279873917 [Report]

Tomino refers to the type of writing. Excessive melodrama and putting "coolness" ahead of logic and scene composition. The writers for Wing were trying to replicate Tomino's style. Which Tomino had done things just as stupid if not more stupid than what you see in Wing. In some of the Gundam series Tomino "wrote", you'd have a character fall out of a helicopter, blow up in mid air and then run into another helicopter, blowing that up. And it's suppose to look cool, but the storyboards he laid out are such a mess and the animation done so quickly, it comes off as GI Joe silly.

The scenes in Wing are actually toned down and laid out better compared to some of Tomino's stuff.

Nah, Ace wo Nerae 2 is the best entry in the series by far. It abandoned the goofiness of the first season, the matches are more dynamic and entertaining, and the story about overcoming the death of a loved one is far more compelling than the straightforward underdog tale from the previous story. Now, Final Stage, now that is dogshit. Whoever decided to focus that much on such an irrelevant character like Toudou, while simultaneously reducing Oka to a cheerleader, was a moron.

Gundam is like Final Fantasy. Both in the style of writing. But also that everyone has a different opinion of where it's best to start, usually the series they started with. And then there's arguments over which timeline is best. And even within those timelines, people will tell you to skip a bunch of them and say some aren't "canon" and so on.

You're almost better to just start with a random one.

who the fuck says that? if you're not starting with 0079 (ew) then there's really only several other entry points I the master of all anime would recommend.
If you just wanna dip your feet:
>G - I actually don't want to watch "Gundam" but I want something really fucking good like Medabots
>0080 - Best UC anything by far.
>Thunderbolt (mild disgust if you start with this though)
>really any of the AUs although SEED or 00 are probably the best "well rounded" ones.

My personal rules:
>Don't watch Turn A until you watched everything cumulative in release date. (fuck you)
>Don't see Zeta without fucking 0079 (also watch the series stupid fucker you're watching a 49 episode and you're planning on skipping 0079 by watching the movies? The fuck's wrong with you dumb bitch)
>Try to watch the other UC entries more on release/chronological order rather than jumping all over the place. 0083/08th MS Team are pretty standalone but Unishit/NT/Hathaway/Doan's Island (fuck you) all require previous knowledge sorta.
>Fuck you don't watch build fighters until you've seen all the gundam shows before it.

It's kind of funny that Cobra himself wears something similar to Barbarella's red suits.

Yeah I'm genuinely surprised that people said Ace O Nerae 2 is bad.
I didn't care really much for the first anime (well no shit it's incomplete, and it's a little too trippy for me. I still find it hilarious that the manga nor the anime remake got a translation. What's even the best way to complete the first series anyways? lmfao the movie?). But AoN2 was pretty grounded and seeing Hiromi's friends refuse to tell her about Coach's death for a little bit was pretty emotional.

Wrong post, wrong answer to the wrong question.
>>Where should I start?
>Well, what you should do is watch this and this and this and this and this and
All that matters is where to START.
