In the original novels, Tanba still loved to fight, but you got the idea that it stemmed less from "Be THE STRONGEST" and more his desire to feel anything because after everything he had been through it was the only way he could. See, he's extremely traumatized over how his mentor figure got fucking murdered by some guys with knives and then they all ganged up on Tanba trying to kill him. This trauma basically numbed his emotions due to how it was the most emotionally intense moment in his entire life. He's chasing that high not for pleasure but just to feel alive, which I find extremely sad

I've read the Taniguchi version, but honestly I really didn't like it very much. Tanba looked like a standoffish brute with the charisma of a rhino, especially compared to the early art of Itagaki's Garouden where Tanba looks much leaner and meaner.

To get this pic I went back to check the first chapters of Itagaki's Garouden and realized there's a new team putting out a newer translation based on the italian release. What's concerning is that in the 3 first chapters I caught myself missing the old translation. I think I'm too far gone. My entire appreciation of Garouden might be based on dialogue and quotes that might be completely headcanon.
