At least they're fast, and everything under the sun gets translated. In the old days, we actually had to wait for subs (sometimes days), and some stuff simply didn't get any.
If you want an old-school fansub experience, go watch Princession Orchestra. The fansub is so goddamn slow that one /a/non started making MTL subs just so the thread could watch the show without having to wait almost a week.

We just have to wait for AI to get good enough that MTL will be squeal or better than fansubs.

Ideally the future will be MTL where you can decide the style of translations, whether you want to keep some Japanese words or honorifics and such.

The fansub is also deliberately inaccurate. MTLanon's subs match the dialogue more closely but I hope he gets around to the OP and ED eventually.

Fansubs had a culture of free competition: don't want to wait 6 months for an old group to finish rendering their crazy typeset of an episode - make your own speedsub, don't like pronouns used by some group - release an edit etc etc.
Most anime shows now get "tolerable enough" official speedsubs but some people do bother making oldschool fan-tl with karaoke and all that shit if they really like the series, and just ignore the existence of official subs.
Manga release culture was always about exclusivity, claims, sniping etc faggotry and pretending that if there is no official english release than scanlate is somehow legal. That's big part of why official translators see no competition and do whatever they want.
