Someone explain this to me. I went to an anime/manga club at my university a few years back when I first arrived and I swear man the guys there were the most stereotypical people. Guys who were overweight, weird voices, braces in their 20s, lots of asians and pajeets, and of course, that one black guy and that one semi-attractive girl doing the whole uwu shtick. I was by far the most normal looking person in the room. But that isn't the point. I started asking these people about what shows they were into and I swear man everybody I talked to said either One Piece, Naruto or Bleach. They hadn't even heard of Lain. How the fuck was I the most normal person and simultaneously the most knowledgeable person in the room? Can anyone explain this phenomena?

I'll probably get a ban for this thread but whatever. Fuck you all up the wrongin

Anime in the past half decade has gone from being a passion for us niche fans to a rest haven for weirdos and freaks that simultaneously don't want to learn more about the genre outside of the big 3.

I see it at anime conventions all the time. Before you would get normal looking people that also loved this shit, now you get a lot of LGBTQ people, fat women, and weirdos with shit power levels.

With black people its funny cause they'll either be super surface level fans or super otaku

I don't see why you can't love One Piece, Dragonball, and LOTGH. It's one of those hobbies where it doesn't actually matter that much if it becomes normie because chinks don't care and won't cater.

It's actually really interesting for me to see. I go to the same bazaar I went to ten years ago. Ten year ago the only anime thing was Goku, everything else western comic book characters and shit like that.

I go back today? Luffy's face is plastered EVERYWHERE. And not just him, you have Zoro and Ace too. On a wall selling posters, with maybe 30, he's 5 of them. Crazy to think.

Hobby was taken over by normalfags desperate to seem geeky/nerdy/quirky for social media. Same thing that happened to all my hobbies. The anime/manga club I founded at my old college used to have a dedicated group of people translating content, making copies of tapes (and later DVDs) to give away to members, took up donations ($2 per tape/disc/copy of translated manga) which were put into a pool to import more stuff. Most everyone in the club was actively learning Japanese and most of us went to live in Japan for a time. Some still live and work there.

I got invited back a year ago by the current members because they wanted to celebrate 25 years of the club. It was pretty much what you described. They had even managed to somehow lose all our original copies of fansubs from back in the day. Which I left there when I graduated because I'd already converted them over to digisubs. The even threw the old Amiga in the garbage.

I will not be going back.

What do you mean "normal"? In this day and age normal means different to a lot of people, especially to people on the spectrum or LGBTQ whatever people. If you are asking about ugly people or people less hygienic well you get lots of people like that everywhere you can go, especially when people rush to be first in line and probably camp out in the outside with no bathroom and it is all day hot and they sweat much, and they probably eat lot of chips garlic nuts and snack cakes. But you be careful about talking "normal" you might turn people off for wrong reasons and if you try to explain that they might be defensive especially the people who use "doublespeak"..

I don't. Yesterday's otaku knew how to hide their power level. The average otaku taking Japanese language classes and annoying whatever nip was forced to teach them looks like a well adjusted person compared to the average idiot into this stuff today.

I don't know how the modern wannabe otaku managed to become even more pathetic than the true otakus from my time in college. But they have.

I hate when my girlfriend acts like this. I really wish it wasn't acceptable to be like that. It is especially bad when it is regarding my friends.

It is a miracle I can do as much manga related stuff as I can with how she is. Admittedly, I don't tell her how much I spent on Nendoroids and books.

I know what you mean. The local cons here in FL are full of ABC Soup People and really fat unhealthy types that sell the ABC Soup lifestyle at the vendor booths. Itโ€™s like if you are a regular person you arenโ€™t welcomed. Also doesnโ€™t help that they hate anyone who doesnโ€™t link like them, on top of the furries.

Back at my university weeb club, more than half the members later became ABC Soup People or they had mental illness.

>Back at my university weeb club, more than half the members later became ABC Soup People or they had mental illness.

I don't know why this happened. Everyone in our otaku club went on to be pretty normal. I think this is the result of not ever having children honestly. If you don't have them by middle age you start desperately looking for things to fill that hole in your life. You start looking for purpose and trying to fit-in with the younger generation. Instead of working on yourself and finding a girl or some meaning in your work you end up going off the deep end.

We had 5 people originally in our club. By the year I left we'd grown it into 15-20 people total. I've kept in touch with the original 5 members all these years and most of the freshman that joined the last year I was running it. Out of those 15 people everyone went on to:
>Move to Japan and work professionally in their chosen major
>Stay in the states after living in Japan for a year or so and find work in their major or switched to something related to it
>most have families and children now
>most are still into anime/manga but they no longer volunteer their time to do things like fansubbing since they got run out of the "communities" for refusing to cater to mental illness
>A couple went on to work in the anime/manga industry in various publication roles
>one became a mangaka that is doing pretty well because her fans don't know she's gaijin
>none of them "came out" as some kind of mentally ill person or became medicated

Out of all 20 members we've only lost 3 so far to drug overdoses. They were always way into doing stuff like LSD and opioids though. Aside from their addiction problems they were pretty normal and they were never rude or a bother to be around. We had a couple that became full blown alcoholics but they're functional alcoholics that hold day jobs. Most of them found work in Japan working on software.

We were considered the misfit geek weebs back in the day.

>mostly computer geeks and people learning Japanese as a second language
>pool resources to import new manga and anime and translate it
>get old hardware from IT department to help in the above efforts
>write software for the above efforts like virtuadub, aegisub, cracked DivX, xvid and later x264
>screen rare anime to anyone that wants to watch it and sell tapes/discs to support club activities
>maybe go to con together and the girls might be into making cosplay
>create and import doujin works
>organize trips to Japan and work our asses off to pay for them somehow

College anime club 2025
>bunch of idiots that can't use a computer

>ecchi and yuri are banned but yaoi is a-okay

>go to cons to buy overpriced mainstream garbage
>none of the members can name an show that isn't mainstream and/or being streamed on CR
>none of the members can speak Japanese beyond a few words they've learned from being faggots on the internet like "kawaiiii" and UwU.

Going to an anime club now sounds soul destroying, but anime clubs in, like, 2002 or something like that must have felt like a terrorist group or something. If I had been at the right college I could have gone at the time, because I'm old enough, but that sort of thing didn't exist around me.

Who the fuck are you lecturing too? You are an abnormal failure and you deserve to be called abnormal because you actively refuse to engage in the standards that normal people in a sane society ought to adhere too. In fact, you have now decided that being different gives you a right to be an unpleasant loser with no standards ruining everything around you. I deem this the sci-fi problem because of how many sci fi authors had this attitude and ended up doing awful degenerate shit.

I think it's the other way around. The weird, unhealthy dweebs seem exactly like the people I went to high school with, just older and fatter. My high school was near the beginning of trans trend, the demographic might not be trying to fit in with the younger ones, they pioneered it.

What I mean is everyone is pre-programmed to have children and breed. So once you hit your mid-late 20s and it hasn't happened yet your brain short circuits and you start looking for purpose in life. Since there is no real purpose in materialism buying new plastic crap to make yourself feel better only continues to work for so long. As such people start regressing into more and more fucked up shit: drug addiction, alcoholism, strange fetishes and the various "communities" of people that participate in them.

Where if you have children you're forced to provide for them and your spouse. You don't have time for any of that bullshit because you're too busy trying to figure out how to feed 3+ people instead of just yourself. It fills any and all time you had to become depressed and think too much about things. Plus seeing your children having joy in their lives fills the hole you'd normally try to fill up with getting high or chasing a high through the various fucked up activities these people participate in. Be it their strange fetishes or their constant need for attention.

All the dweebs, geeks, nerds and misfits from my high school+college days all mellowed out eventually and found someone to be their spouse. They're all happy for the most part. They might have times where they feel down but they have a family support system to fall back on. These people you're talking about don't. Hence why they need their "safe spaces" and "communities". They don't know what a real "community" even is. A "community" isn't a bunch of fucked up individuals. It's a group comprised of friends and family units all coming together to participate in some activity together.

Start one! When I started our club I did it with $5 budget and hardly any help. I got old equipment from the A/V department. That's how I got our CRT television and Laserdisc player initially. I got old server from the IT department. The A/V department was going to toss out an old Amgia with a genlock. I got that so we could time subtitles. I got a bunch of VCRs from them as well and cracked them open to replace the heads and refurbish them. I got some old computers from the IT guys when they were going to toss those along with a bunch of stuff like routers/switches/and CAT5 cable. I got a projector from my old high school's A/V club because they were getting new stuff along with more TVs.

I got in touch with friends I knew from IRC and early digisub groups that lived in Japan. This is how I started importing raws and manga. I paid some money out of my own pocket to get booth space at a campus event. This is how I found the first 3 outside members. The other one was from my JSL class and was already helping me translate stuff. I got another guy in the compsci department to join up and he helped me get started modifying and writing software in C and C++ for Windows along with getting some things on our Amiga fixed. I contacted some college clubs on the west coast and they sent me raws that we translated. When we sent them back they sent us a bunch of second generation copies of fansubs they'd done for various shows. By the end of the second month we had a massive collection going. Then we started selling VHS tapes through mail order and on campus to support the club.

My friend's family owned a printing shop. We manually typeset manga there and got to use pressed+other equipment after business hours. This is how we initially did scanlation before we could do it digitally. In time someone finally joined that knew photoshop. Although we still used their presses from time to time to print stuff to promote are club.

It's always some "[insert group of people i don't like] will be there!" type shit no matter what decade. Years ago it would have been ugly teenage girls into Death Note and yaoi.

That's exactly how it works. People come together and make clubs. Then they get to dictate who and who isn't allowed to join them regularly. You have open events to try out new members. If they don't work out you politely tell them they didn't make it.

The bar I frequent doesn't allow fags and these types of people to join. Since it's a "social club" with a small membership fee to enter. If you aren't a member you can't enter and drink with everyone. They exclude all sorts of types of people this way and it's 100% legal. Also since it's a private club it doesn't have to abide by stupid laws like "no smoking allowed" and "no gambling"

Bro, anime fandom ain't what it used to be. They are all weak nowadays. Why do you think queer folk even like anime today? It has become weak as well.

From what I've observed, most anime clubs tend to be run on university or high school campuses and are required to be open to every student.

Anime clubs are basically irl discord servers, you'll mostly get weirdos because "normal" anime enjoyers don't immerse themselves in otaku culture too much.. at least not enough to seek out irl communities.
