I love Kawaguchi's art, but MAN is his storywriting not great at all. The funny thing is that there were a few moments that it could've taken an interesting twist in the direction, but it took every choice that made it the most mid, typical, bland shonen manga ever.

It's reaching levels of mid that I didn't know was even possible. Kawaguchi NEEDS to pair up with a good writer or draw for video games or something...

If I was the editor, I would've asked for these changes.
In the first chapter, have Otr's village be forced to evacuate as the Ice Kingdom got too close. Sister goes to a safer place further inland, Otr joins some of the men who go to the army. Put emphasis on leaving home and with it childhood.
In chapter 2, have the frozen port the obstacle that stops the army from performing their viking funeral rites (can't send boats with the dead to burn in the sea). Otr feels compelled by the grieving families, is reminded of how his family grieved for his father and decides to risk his life to unfreeze the sea and also fight the Ice Kingdom with his power.
In chapter 3, the army tries to bring Otr to the main army as his power is valuable but they are ambushed. They get saved by Sixten who was sent to bring in the boy with fire magic. Otr, awed by his strength, takes the initiative and asks him to teach him how to fight.
Change chapter 4 would get the biggest change, have him meet a king/prince/princess who assigns him to Sixten as his disciple. He tests him in front of a crowd and he proves himself, boosting morale.
Then we go back on track, Sixten, Otr and the other girl go around as Sixten has to do missions and while they do so Otr is getting his training.
In the latest chapter, instead of having him complete his initial training, he Sixten leave them behind as he goes to a dangerous mission but trouble finds them as the villager stumbles upon them. At that point they take it upon themselves, even though they have not permission, to save the village.
The fight is harder then expected but thanks to Otr special fire power and the girl's experience they come out on top.
