Cute girls doing cute things genre. Aria, K-On, etc. Not because viewers wanted those more. But the big names in mahou shoujo like Sato and Ikuhara started being put on those kinds of shows by the studios. And the B teams from various studios were put on mahou shoujo stuff like Nanoha and Precure. The mahou shoujo's became more of a corporate assembly line trying to cater to the trends. Rather than original concepts with good directors which the 80s and 90s shows got.

After a decade of this, then we started to get "subversion" and parody shows like Madoka and Machikado Mazoku. These shows are fine on their own and didn't ruin mahou shoujo. But they are a sign that mahou shoujo has become a trope that no one has innovated on. They're just making variations and parodies of the old concepts.

You can usually tell by the type of lighting, shading and uniformity of the image. Yes, stuff is getting better (no longer using that super harsh lighting and trying to imitate sketchy styles). But there's usually still too much uniformity in the shading and overuse of extreme angles.
