In your opinion what is stopping magical boys from becoming a popular genre like magical girls? I know people will point out things like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, but I don't understand why there just seems to be this barrier.

I think it's just because everyone put every goddamn thing under the magical girl umbrella. Transforming superheroine? Magical girl. Girl who uses magic/magic items to solve the problem of the week? Magical girl. Witch? Also a magical girl, except when they don't feel like it. And then the fringe cases where just having magic powers at all or being next to magic makes you a magical girl (looking at how people treat utena and rayearth). But boys don't have that problem, and all of those things are explicitly labeled as their own subgenres or situations (like Magical Buddy, Henshin, etc etc), so they'dprobably just see those as a slightly different attemptat one of those specifiers. If you just mean a boy who solves problems similar to your superheroine magical girls, or with a costume along the design philosophies of those types, then probably the board will tell you "because it looks too gay/whatever bogeyman I don't like from the rival websites" for little boys to consume

Magical girls has wider appeal since it can actually be enjoyed by its target population of young girls, and then the rest of the moefags and yurifags
Magical transforming boys like the OP plays into the fantasies of the fags and women and not young boys at all for the most part, there's not much of a point in making it without unironic spam fanservice, and the audience for that isn't high enough to justify it I'm assuming
Regular magical boys is just mashle or solo leveling nowadays

Who actually wants magical boys, though? It looks really effeminate. Even Tuxedo Kamen is zesty as hell.
There's Kamen Rider and GARO, especially GARO, for the male equivalent.
Guys just don't fit very well into the whole magical girl aesthetic, I think. There's no obvious niche for them to fill.

Men into magical girl shows don't want to be gay boys LARPing as magical girls. They want to be cute girls. Girls into magical girl shows don't want to see gay boys LARPing as magical girls. They want to date ripped muscle men, bad boys and fatherly types. These shows only appeal to yaoifags. Which while a dedicated market is only like 1% of the total population. Which doesn't care for tinks. They want to see otherwise manly men being forced into gay sex acts against their will. Aside from them you have actual pedophiles. Who would rather see 3D boys than 2D boys.

There's also the issue of a guy with magic powers probably more effective than a magical girl anyway, which undercuts the entire premise

Fujos like gay shit, but they don't like faggy shit.
Magical boys are fag shit. They're not gay the good masculine way fujos like. So they will never like it, for what they want already exists on things made for men.
And that's exactly why men won't ever like them also. On top of being gay it's the worst kind of gay there is not even homosexual men stand.
It's a worthless niche.

The idea is that magical girls transformed into a cooler/prettier version of themselves. For girls, it's pretty dresses and colorful hair. For boys, they are either henshin heroes like Rider, Sentai or Metal Heroes like >>279964819 or if you want something with visible faces, transforming clothes and magical powers, stuff like Ronin Warriors or Saint Seiya would fit the bill.

magical girl shows are not solely whimsical, they are a way of talking about social issues related to women. shonen and super sentai already have that for men

what would a magical boy show talk about?

One word: Yuritroons. Mahou Shoujo actually used to be a fujo-owned genre before their invasion that was brought on by the Sailor Moon manga and its contemporary derivatives Nanoha and Madoka. Though even Toei today has been hinting at a fujo-themed Magical Boy Precure spinoff with it’s Dancing Stars stage play…

Because women are superior and can enjoy shows and characters of their own gender regardless of if that character is feminine or masculine and not think it's gay, while men can't do that, simple as.

Magical boys only work when its mixed gender team.
You cannot make it just magical boys and play all magical girls cliches straight unless you make a parody.

magical girls actually appeal to young girls, magical boys would never appeal to young boys

like you mentioned, there are similar genres that boys do like, but you specifically want a magical boy aesthetic that just will never be popular with boys
it'd take tranny grooming level munchausen's by proxy on a boy to get him into want to watch magical boy shows, for the same reason why young boys didnt watch my little pony

the end result is, you want a magical boy anime for adults

But they had all of those. I. The magical girl shows. Hell shugo chara had a few boys doing the same stuff the girls were doing and the leading boys were pretty popular.
Anonymous No.279970748 [Report]

Yeah, and to be frank it's a false equivalence. Plenty of series (especially post 90s) end up following a format that resembles tokusatsu heroes for magical girls (and at the time that was subversive), so I can see why everyone and their mother thinks the same for boys would be your saint seiyas or super sentais. But the actual tone of most magical girl stories and the genres they fall into don't actually lend itself to having toku/henshin completely be their equivalent. Plus there are toku series that actually have the opposite gender on the team

Depends. Boeibu was liked, and the few nuche magical boy series we get are appreciated. Plus people don't seem to realize that you don't HAVE to make them look puffy and pastel. Many of thr MBoys series I see try to make them whimsical but boyish. And then there's the ones who give them cool wizard robes

The magical girl genre has already become niche besides Precure, how are magical boys popular?
In my opinion, magical boys don't really work. Magical girls are basically tokusatsu but girly. So you want the girly version of the boys version, but they have to be boys but it still needs to be girly?
The end result is usually a parody. And if it's played serious then it's so niche it almost never gets an anime. Like the Boy Precure that's just a stage musical, or the Mew Mew spinoff manga.

Yeah, Yuri has become now a expected trope of a magical girl show, or at least implied. And since is something that does sell, is inevitable a lot of magical girl shows will have the incentive to have written a story with all female-cast. with either little male character relevancy, or none at all in order to protect the Yuri.
