Musashi isn't a "national hero". At best he's a folk hero, but like most folk heroes his popularity waxes and wanes depending on current iterations of his life's story. Musashi frequently pops up in Japanese culture, there's even an anime airing right now where he is a character, but even in that anime he's treated as a comedic relief character.
