Goku has reached the apex of his powers as a Super Saiyan, but still dies in the future because of a heart virus. Having a near death experience, he is motivated to pass his knowledge down to Gohan. Forcing him to fight Cell, an amalgam of their past enemies, was a nearly perfect conclusion.
