Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the fourteenth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>279865589

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping the one short story from the Rumic World and Rumic Theatre series that came out around this time. Today, the scans I have of the one shot are the official VIZ ones. Today, that will be "A Guilty Happening".
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.279988024 >>279988044 >>279989242 >>280014776
Original title was ่…ฐ็ •ใ‘ๅ‚ใฎๆ€ช. ่…ฐ็ •ใ‘ is the name of the hill here and it means broken back literally but refers to breaking down while in the middle of something or faltering halfway. It is also a term in sumo for collapsing in the middle of a bout.

VIZ changed it since we don't have a short term for that and this works as a bit of a pun.

็ต็•Œ was the term used here. In Inuyasha, this was commonly translated as barrier or spirit shield, but since Rin-ne takes place in the modern day, VIZ goes with force field. You could probably quibble over which to use.

I have a note from Furinkan here, it seems VIZ did a good job at translating the double meaning though.

"The shinigami tool that Rokumon uses to revive Rinne is called a "hazumidama capsule" (ๅผพใฟ็މใ‚ซใƒ—ใ‚ปใƒซ). Hazumi can mean "bouncing" (as in bouncing ball which is what the item looks like) but it can also mean "to stimulate" or "to become lively" which is what the ball is meant to cause Rinne to do."

Also, he's so little on the ball.

Alright, Black Cat World Elder was "้ป’็Œซ็•Œ้•ท่€". And the Honorary Ten-Time Champion was "ๆฐธไธ–ๅๆฎต". ๆฐธไธ– is apparently a lifetime title holder in things such as shogi or go. ๅๆฎต is "tenth rank", also from go. The name was spelled ้ป’ไบ•็”ฐ and you may notice the ้ป’ in it, which means "black".

Furinkan seemed to interpret ๆฐธไธ– or "eisei" as his first name, as it also means eternity. But it seems like it is probably a reference to his title.

We see a number of types here. I assume the bird is a karasutengu (็ƒๅคฉ็‹—) or crow tengu, where tengu is a supernatural creature sometimes translated as goblin. Then a ๆ็ฏใŠๅŒ–ใ‘ or "chouchinobake", which means paper lantern ghost. Then we got a tanuki also known as a Japanese raccoon dog but depicted here as the supernatural creature and greatly resembling the tanuki statues common in Japanese media (with his bill). A namahage (็”Ÿๅ‰ฅใ’), a oni or at least, a man in an oni mask and straw coat with a big beard and knife from Oga Peninsula, apparently (this one is new to me, I'm glad I found it). We got Right, the rabbit from last volume. We got a haniwa (ๅŸด่ผช) a type of clay figure buried with the dead in ancient Japan. And then we have Kawaii Cook-san, the character from a children's song about a doodle that we've seen before.

The term translated as "evil spirit" here was ้‚ชๆฐ— but the Japanese text did put ้ฌผ or "oni" in parentheses after. The trivia was a bit different, it just said "่ฑ†ใฏ้ญ”ๆป…ใซ้€šใ˜ใ€้ฌผใ‚’่ฟฝใ„ๆ‰•ใ†ใจไฟกใ˜ใ‚‰ใ‚Œใฆใ„ใ‚‹ใ€‚" which apparently translates to "It is believed that beans have the power to ward off evil spirits and drive away oni". The kanji bit is a localizer adding some context. This is a common theory regarding the origin of the custom, saying that ้ญ”ๆป… (mametsu) sounds like ่ฑ† (mame).

"Bean crate"? Maybe they changed localizers or something. Anyway, the term used here was ๆก (masu), which literally means square but refers to a square wooden box used to measure rice in Japan during the feudal period.

These are used during Setsubun to hold the beans kids throw per tradition. They're also used to drink sake out of ceremonially.

Simple gag, but I do like the fact that we got the oni wearing a suit like a stereotypical demon and then it turns out he's wearing it because he's a put-upon salaryman.

I can not read what Tsubasa's seals say. Also, so mean but I guess he is being a bit territorial about Sakura Mamiya.

Furinkan notes that: "While ill, Tsubasa is wearing a hanten (่ขข็บ) a short cotton stuffed coat typically worn in winter. Hanten often have a family crest on them and Tsubasa's has the cross due to his last name (Jumonji means "cross or crucifix")."

And "Sakura is making okayu (ใŠ็ฒฅ) for Tsubasa. This is rice porridge that is easy on the stomach and often given to babies and people that are feeling ill and so it is thought of as a healing food. It has similar connotations to chicken-noodle soup in the west."

I also missed another note:

"When Rinne reads the story about the fox-demon causing problems 100 years ago the building that is shown is the Ryouunkaku. It was the first western-style skyscraper in Japan and was built in 1890 and destroyed in in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It is commonly associated with the 1910s and 1920s and is used to help frame the time period (the Taisho era). "

Yeah, VIZ changed it to "yip" since that's the closest thing we have to the sound a fox makes.

Rokumon used the term ้ญ”ๆณ•้™ฃ which is just literally magic circle. Also, I did find a magic circle that looks like this one (it seems to match the poster as well), but the only place I saw it was the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha fanwiki? I can't find another source for this specific one with Pi and Delta. They call it the Midchildan Circle. I can't find anyone saying if it is based on an actual thing from Arcs Goetia or some other occultism thing.

It would be pretty funny if Rumiko looked up "magic circle" and copied a design closely from an anime from 2004, but I don't see that as likely.

Also, they have just really blatant misinformation on the episode for this one. Horns! I don't remember if they outright state she is an oni. But they do resemble Oni horns. Anyway, I'll post Furinkan's note:

"Renge's flowers hide her horns which indicate she is an oni, a type of Japanese ogre.
Additionally the type of flower Renge wears in hear hair are lotus flowers (they also appear on her shinigami scythe). "Renge" means "lotus" in Japanese. Also the lotus is common Buddhist iconography symbolizing the power of the soul to rise from the muddy floor of a pond (materialism, the living world) towards the surface of the pond (enlightenment)."

And here's the note regarding Renge's full name: "ๅ››้ญ”ใ‚Œใ‚“ใ’ Renge's last name, "Shima" (ๅ››้ญ”) is a Buddhist term for the four types of demons that trouble humans. Those demons are "Bonnouma" a demon of ill desires, "Onma" a demon who causes many kinds of suffering, "Shima" (written differently than Renge's name is the demon of death, and "Tenma" the demon who tries to prevent people from doing good deeds. Renge's first name is written in hiragana, but the meaning is "lotus flower" which is one of Renge's most commonly used tools."

It was written with English letters on the label in the original manga as well. Wonder if it is a parody of a specific logo.

I will be returning next Saturday to dump Volume 15 of Rin-ne. But right now, I will be dumping the Rumic Theater one-shot "A Guilty Happening".

ใ‚„ใพใ—ใ„ๅ‡บๆฅไบ‹ (Yamashii Dekigoto) or "A Guilty Happening" was published on March 5th, 2012 in Big Comic Original. As such, it was published around the time of these chapters.

This translation is a fanscan. Of course, as unofficial fanscans and translations, they have their own issues but at the least we don't have to worry about flipped art. This story has four pages of color and four pages of red tint. It seems the fanscans found the original printing of the story, which is great.

Seems this is a different scanlator? Not sure though. Also, they seem to have translated the editor's marketing on the front. I am pretty sure that is who writes these. They normally aren't in volumes. Anyway, I don't have too much to say about this one. It has some interesting stuff in it, but I am a bit ambivalent on it.

during my searches, i came across a spanish blog (unfortunately this did not give me leads) but there was a mention there that during the 70s one of rumiko's favorite authors was making a manga version of spiderman and that that's why "punched victims" (heh) make the "sign of the *horns" when they go flying
*(this is a both a translation + it jogged my memory that that hand sign *is* known by that name in english too)

It is absolutely a different style of comedy. Rin-ne is absolutely a series with multiple straight men rather than everyone taking turns being them. The goofiness is almost entirely the ghosts (though Ageha and Sabato obviously do it too). I genuinely think Rinne's poor gag only hits sometimes and Sakura's comedy is entirely her not reacting or reacting to the wrong thing.

Still, much in the same way I missed UY's brazenness when I read Ranma 1/2, I appreciate both. There are some moments in Rin-ne that really hit for me, so I felt it was worth reading through for that.

mantispidae are part of the order neuroptera, and mantispidae is a family rather than an individual insect species
using the example species on wikipedia
>Mantispa styriaca
mantispa is a genus within the family mantispidae
