Yeah. It takes place hundreds of years after a huge machine revolt (AI in this use mobile armors). The war knocked humanity back by hundreds of years (pre-War humanity terraformed Mars and had a ton of extremely physics bending technology), with most of the tech never being regained. In fact, the gundams, which were pieces of pre-War tech, that won the war for humanity, are the most advanced frames in the setting, despite being hundreds of years old. The children of the gundam pilots who saved the world became the seven lords of the Earth Sphere, but by the time of IBO, the seven great families had stagnated into a corrupt and decadent force that oppressed others, especially those living on Mars and in space.

IBO has a lot of crazy shit in it, much of it left over from the Calamity War. It's probably a much better setting for adventure stories rather than typical Gundam military and political conflicts. There are vast areas of space that are extremely dangerous due to the slumbering AI and space pirates, there are hidden treasures to be found in the form of lost pre-War technology, and then there's Gjallahorn always lurking in the background. The Calamity War itself, and all the history before it, is draped in mystery and spoken of almost in mythological terms (a lot of the historical records were lost in the war).
