When that was over, they didn't know what else to do so they tried the same trick on Gundam. Problem is, they had to come up with something original, and the talented person who originally came up with the source material wasn't in the room with them directing their every move.

If they'd removed the main trio and told the story from Challia and Zeon's point of view, it would have had a lot more time to develop the whole AU thing they were clearly more invested and fix the pacing issue. They wasted to much time in the clanbats, and honestly I couldn't care less for neither Nyaan nor Machu, Shuji was boring to, but at least his character was a bit more interesting for the little screentime he had.
And Anno and Tsurumaki should stop being so self-referential, it took me out of the story every time they included a reference to EVA or FLCL.

Best Gundam anime in last 10 years (with possible exception of SD Gundam World SSD/Heroes which I still haven't seen yet). Followed by Build Divers ReRise and Thunderbolt. Easily better than the last two AU TV series at least.
Before the last episode I thought it would be 7 or 8 out of 10, but it unironically exceeded all my expectations resolving both of its main plotlines well and giving a bunch of good fanservice on top of it, so it might've pushed it to 9 for me.
If I had to say something, it might've needed an additional episode or two to focus on the main trio for people that couldn't pick up on their relationship nuances and in particular show more of Shuji, who kind of got a short end of stick (because I swear, he's the most misunderstood character by the audience looking through threads).
Hell, even a half of an episode would've been enough. You could cut OYW flashback early on that doesn't add much to the story as it is mainly just a remake of original show with little changes.

Did we need to? No, it could've been something else with an equivalent result, like Char or Chalia killing Kycilia with something else and Char and Chalia disabling each other MS in other way.
Am I glad it happened? Yes, especially the former. Those moments are legitimately cool, done in a tasteful enough way and don't take enough time. People that watched the original could feel nostalgic, while the new audience could just see it for the first time and think that those sequences are damn sweet.
Honestly, I've got no idea why people percieve those as cringe, when episode 2 was way worse in that regard, yet a lot of the "Gundam fans" here consider it the best part of the show.
