I can't think of a single element in this show that's even on par with Girls Band Cry, let alone better. The only possible exception is the voice acting for some characters, and that’s just because every VA in GBC was a newbie. The build up to the band battles is entertaining in a shonenshit kind of way, but the payoff isn't worth it because the performances themselves are meh no matter how much they inform me otherwise. I'm finally watching the last couple of episodes I had in the backlog, and it's incredible just how unlikable they are. I get why they are written that way, because: A, they are the final opponent of the anime, so they have to come across as antagonistic, and B, there simply isn't enough space to develop four different characters with only a couple of episode left, so it is easier to just make them assholes. But come on, it comes across as so cartoony and lame, that it directly deflates the whole final conflict because it's impossible to care.

Samfagging to say, I finished the last episode. As a whole, the show was fine, but I wouldn't watch a hypothetical second season. I would rank it well below every other recent anime series about bands. It doesn't have a strong cast of characters, and the story is fairly uneventful. Ironically, the weakest aspect of the show was the music. It's kind of amazing just how much it feels as if they didn't care about it. When the band is playing in this type of venue and you make it sound as if they were playing in a studio, you kinda fucked it up. Even when they were playing at their best and the crowd was having metaphorical orgasms, it never broke past the barrier of plain blandness.

I enjoyed Rock wa Lady no Tashiname Deshite more than I did Girls Band Cry, but that's mostly because Girls Band Cry had a lot of cringe-inducing moments of Nina being a stupid fucking teenager sperging out. Also out of the other girls-forming-a-rock-band anime (K-On, Bocchi, Girls Band Cry), Rock wa Lady is the only one IIRC who made use of visual metaphors during performances, the others just showed the concert happening as is. On a personal level I still prefer Rock wa Lady over Girls Band Cry including their music, but if anyone were to ask me about three anime about girls forming a rock band, I'd put Girls Band Cry instead of Rock wa Lady along with K-On and Bocchi. But if someone asked for four instead I'd still list Rock wa Lady along with those three.
Without comparing against the other girls-form-a-rock-band anime, I'd say Rock wa Lady is still okay on its own. The premise of a commoner girl getting into a school for rich girls while keeping her un-lady-like hobby under wraps and Ririsa's personal dilemma between committing fully to being a lady or keeping her secret hobby and her subtly seeking guidance from those around her regarding that interesting enough, but it's nothing novel or deep, not that it needs to be. I've been listening to instrumental metal growing up, so I found their music good enough, but like the girls said in the show it might not be for everyone.

That's because they were at least willing to stand by their music and not need to distract the moronic viewers like you with visual short hand for shit you should be gleaming from the actual story, characters and lyrics. "Oh no Tina feels like she's lost in the woods better show that FUCKING LITERALLY." This was just lazily hammering the point because the show didn't actually have any real sense of growth and character development.

It would be if the show actually focused on and worked with it anyways. Instead Lilisa can coast by just fine with no trouble having mastered the basics of OUJOU-ing off screen and before the show started. Her fear of needing to live up to high society has zero weight because there's zero actual threat and we see zero actual danger. We won't even see her new step dad for a decently long time and there's no indication that he would resent them for being poor. All of this is unfounded. Moreover the idea of being a stealth band sure doesn't work out well when they don't do anything to try and stay hidden. The show has absolutely no idea what it wants to be. And ALL OF THIS might be forgiven if at least the music was good but it's not and there's no real insight or execution of why they needed to be instrumental. It's lazy. This show is fucking lazy.

The symbolism in this show was so basic and embarrassingly in-your-face that I felt the show was condescending to me. As if it was saying to me, "Hey, retard, do you get it? Tina’s playing on their side, but not in harmony with their music, but by the end of the episodes, they play in unison. Do you get it? It’s deep!"

I think that just ends up sabotaging the whole performance. In Bocchi, Blue Giant, Hibike Euphonium, BanG Dream etc you get to see the characters go all out without any visual distractions. It gives you this kind of cinematic feel.

This show has zero faith in the viewer. There's this one moment in episode 11 where Lilisa meets a former student of the academy who reduced her passion for the guitar to nothing more than a shitty distraction. She's pissed off but can't say anything to her because she needs to save appearances, so she goes to the music room and plays the guitar to let off steam. As a viewer, you perfectly understand the whole situation, so it was the perfect moment for the show to shut up and let the visuals and music speak. But, during the entire scene, Lilisa delivers this monologue that just serves to reiterate information you’ve already pieced together and spells out stuff that is already obvious. And, of course, it rains during that scene. Hack Writing 101. There are thousands of moments like this. Even when they use the most in-your-face imagery possible on screen, they still feel the need to tell you exactly what the characters are going through. It is SO bad.

I am also shocked by the transparency of the subtext at the heart of this conclusion, and that's saying something given Rock Lady's history of laughably obvious innuendo. Here, however, it's impossible to read the band's insistence on instrumental music through anything but a queer lens. The love songs of Bitter Ganache and the vapid pop of Bacchus both feature singers, and characters repeatedly emphasize that these vocals-driven bands are the “norm.” There's pressure, both externally and internally, for Lilisa and the others to conform to that norm. People criticize their instrumental music for not being appropriate for a general audience. As absurd as the “vocals:straight::instrumentals:gay” analogy is on the surface, Rock Lady uses it in an internally cogent way. If you're going to interpret it in good faith, you have accept that these ladies are lesbians.

Let's do away with subtext, though. Let's look at what literally happens in the episode. Rock Lady begin their concert defiant in front of a crowd of angry women bearing totems to their boy crushes, and Rock Lady end it to thunderous applause from a swooning congregation openly discussing their sapphic sexual fantasies amongst themselves. This is an act of queer liberation banishing the specter of compulsory heterosexuality. These four girls basically bang each other on stage so passionately that a packed audience of women sees it and concludes, “hey, we should try that.” This finale is 24 minutes of unrelenting lesbian propaganda, and it is glorious. On a sadder note, though, I extend my condolences to the one woman who wants Tamaki to dominate her. She's barking up the wrong tree, and Tamaki wants to bark for Otoha.

As far as other acts of explicit feminism go, it's satisfying to watch the girls utterly decimate the boys, not that there was much pretense of a contest in the first place. Lilisa and others demolish their petulant entitlement so thoroughly that Tina joins in on the middle finger action! Tina! To repeat my comments from last week, this is a cartoonish portrait of toxic masculinity, but sadly, even that cartoon bears refuting in modern society. Rock Lady also doesn't shy away from layering its themes here. The manager lad, moved by Rock Lady's onstage vigor, rejects Bacchus' abuse and quits, proving that men, too, benefit from feminism. And Lilisa again connects the boys' privilege to their wealth and decries them as rock tourists looking to use their money to expand their already large sphere of influence. Lilisa and others don't have that luxury. To them, music is air. They can't live without it.
