What drives a mangaka to autistically hyper-focus on a single childish story for their entire life and die young while barely enjoying fame and fortune? How do they ignore the voice in their head screaming, "Holy shit, retard! You're wasting your one shot at existence on a shallow, ugly, repetitive battle shonen!"

I read the first three books. The cool initial premise of "mercenaries who work for the evil people in a fantasy world" is instantly abandoned and replaced with a generic "ragtag bunch of heroes help the chosen one defeat an ancient evil" storyline.
The only part of Black Company I liked was the camraderie and goofing around among the soldiers and I get more of that in Malazan anyway.

Read a fucking book my guy. Holy shit. I like one piece, but it's not some masterpiece comparable to Lord of the Rings. It's a comic about adventure. It's fun, it has some "adult" themes, but to claim it's on the same level as lord of the rings is just wrong. I don't even really like LotR that much, I'm just aware of it's quality.

I've read all of them. I even had to translate the aenid for Latin class. It's okay, very obviously written for nationalist propaganda, but I like Rome a lot. LotR I never finished, admittedly but i didn't hate it, other things came up and I never got back to it.

You sure like being smug a lot. You seem a little upset that someone spells things wrong while phone posting and extrapolate that the person must be lying.

I also listed them because they're famous and great works of the world. Everyone should read them. The person I suggested them to has probably heard of them in some way, shape, or form.

One Piece stands as a monumental achievement in storytelling and world-building, demonstrating an unparalleled ability to sustain a complex narrative over a very long period while maintaining high quality and thematic depth. Its global impact and dedicated fanbase are undeniable. While the style and format differ, the sheer scale of its imaginative scope, the depth of its characters, and the intricate tapestry of its narrative earn it a place in conversations about truly influential and enduring fictional works, even alongside literary giants like Lord of the Rings and Dune. It has certainly carved out its own unique and significant legacy. I short, cope.

Based Piratechad. One Piece is a religious epic. One Piece has far surpassed the medium of manga and comic books. It has ventured into the realm of mythology.

One Piece is a masterpiece. No one in the modern age can write a story arc that takes place in a short amount of time with dozens of factions and characters at play, focusing on hundreds of plot points, building up a big climax while also delivering emotional payoff to every single one of those plot-points. There's not a single plot point that does not have a resolution in One Piece. It manages to do all of that while also tackling thought provoking themes and introducing characters that are infinitely more morally interesting than any other story that came before it. One Piece is the type of story you would see in ancient religious and fantasy epics like The Divine Comedy, Odyssey or Mahabharata that are hundreds of years old. No modern authors can replicate a story as masterful as One Piece.

Once his series started selling like dragonball, its not like he had a choice. One Piece is a world wide miracle of merchandising. Theres probably a billion dollars worth of one piece video games, figures, and other shit sold every year. There are entire livelihoods that depend on Oda churning more of this shit out. Its like a civic responsibility for him to make as much one piece as possible before dying.

Yeah and I was recommending stuff to someone. Why would I list things they wouldn't like but I do? They want broadened horizons, so give them stuff that's universally good.

Also, someone not liking good things doesn't mean they aren't human. I understand liking bad things because they appeal to you for whatever reason, but to disregard selected favorites because they're "safe" is a load of shit. You're fighting yourself if you say "you're not allowed to like these things because everyone likes these things". Everyone likes those things because they're generally good. I could name objectively bad things I like, but why would I name things I know are bad to someone who wants to read good books?

Why recommend it? To start a dialog. So he can say "I've read those. What else?" Or "I haven't read those! Can you tell me more?" and then we go from there so I'm not fan dumping my more niche favorites on someone I know nothing about.

Shonen doesn't have a monopoly on themes. This might surprise you, but things like literary themes are unique nor were they invented by manga! In fact there are things with popular themes that predate manga and anime. Crazy! Did you know themes are repeated often across all works? Its crazy but true!

Also you said "it doesn't have themes" then I listed some. So you're just wrong all around.

It really depends on how good their work is. If it's something akin to Berserk, then it is worth to put your entire life in it. But if it's the same dragged on battle shounen, with the same fucking retarded main character, for 30+ years, then it IS a waste of time. I mean, i like some battle shounen, like Dragon Ball, and JoJo. But Toriyama wrapped up in 11 years with DB. And as for JoJo, at least it's a different story with different characters each part. And no, sales don't make a work the best of its category. Popularity don't make something great. One Piece is not even remotely the greatest manga, from an artistic and literary point of view, just because of its outstanding success.

But let's admit it. What Oda really cares about is popularity and success, not artistic value. You have to be blind not to see it. He said himself in some interviews that if fans would guess correctly the ending he would change it. Think about it for a minute. How many times has this happened in the past? How many times did he change the story just because the readers caught on something. Is this how an author who really loves his work would act? And there are plenty of other evidences, from interviews and various comments, on what Oda really values more than anything else. All of them involve appealing to the larger common denominator.

What's wrong with making a really good burger? Burgers are great. And the skills working as a cook somewhere definitely can translate in personal life, even if it's just a frycook.

Also, Tolkien wasn't stupid either.the dude was a language professor and created his own language and syntax when he made the Silmilrilian. He wasn't a braggart either from what I understand. At least oda has put thought into his work and, despite editors making changes, still has kept his work coherent and more or less consistent and has an end to his idea. Not many manga authors do that, or can continue like he has been.

Tolkien created the language and myths before he even wrote The Hobbit. Just for personal fun. That was a real example of someone who believed in what he created. Unlike One Piece, which is a selling cash cow for Shueisha, and a merely a source of ego for Oda without any artistic belief.

To some people, making something extremely culturally influential, not to mention successful, is something to be proud of. I personally would prefer to make multiple things too but OP is doing well how it is. There's no way to know if Oda's still passionate about it or if he's being leveraged to continue but it's not unthinkable that someone would enjoy doing this. And Oda's continuing to regularly work on it unlike Miura and Togashi (though Togashi has more series than HXH).

Not OP, but some people romanticize, and idealize being a mangaka.
Someone like Oda has to deal with editors,
and probably weird ways to justify the money they make.
Like having to make that awful Netflix show.

I could draw as a kid, and liked it.
But then I decided to get serious about it and got better,
and that's when I quit. It was not worth it.
You can do so much more with that time.
You can do nothing also if you want.

Maybe people romanticize the supposed huge money that you'd get,
but when you have money you have to find what to do with it.
If you have nothing to do with it, then you start thinking:
what's the point of me having it then?

It's called passion, you'd understand that if you weren't a wage slave stuck being a consoomer constantly seething at creators

He struck gold with One Piece. Why take risks? You would do the same thing he did. I sure would. He could end it any moment and live the rest of his life in wealth from the licensing and whatnot so he probably enjoys working on it. I'd guess he has so many assistants that it's not that taxing on him.
I think he said in some interview that he put all the ideas that he had for other series' in One Piece already.

And what have you done better? You say that like you're equipped to judge human life as if you've mastered all that they've achieved. Your arrogance is like nails on a chalkboard

I don't think money is always the answer. Some people are just workaholics who can't stop themselves. Oda is probably one of them considering that he needed Shuueisha to force him to take breaks.

If you like the dystopian aspects of the World Government in One Piece, maybe you'll like:
-1984 (George Orwell), my favorite book ever for how deeply he explores the methods, and the real subconscious motives, of authoritarian regimes.
-Animal Farm (Orwell)
-Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury)

Otherwise for sci-fi/fantasy:
-Lord of Light (Roger Zelazny)
-Chronicles of Amber (first cycle only) (Zelazny)
-I, Robot (Asimov)
-This Immortal (Zelazny)
-Dune (Herbert)
-Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (P.H. Dick)

Check out other works of these author too. Most manga/anime are trash from a writing point of view, when compared to good books. Of course you can find trash in literature too, but only a very small percentage of manga, the very peak of their genre, can be compared to a mere good book from a renown author.

It ain't a bad story.

But when you break it down it's an incredibly repetitive story. It's literally "Rightful King Returns" over and over again. Expect more of the same in the final arc.
>The Great Kingdom was run by a Great Tyrant
>But ackshually, they weren't that bad but framed by the actual villains who took over
>WG gets overthrown and the throne and the Great Kingdom is restored.
