The way the story went made the idea unclear. First it was gangster is messing with the family, then it seemed like gangster was sincere about wanting forgiveness, then the 'gangster' became symbolic of the family's unforgiveness and in the end, I'm left wondering if the gangster really wanted to be forgiven or if him not showing up meant he forgave the family for not forgiving him.

It's about closure I believe. Noriko's brother lived because he was able to beat down the biker's ghost but eventually killed himself. I think it should be taken as an equal to living because he knows that the biker is in prison and would get the death sentence. I don't think the idea is forgiveness at all; even if that's the inciting event. Also to me, Noriko's brother killing himself is just too much. I could understand him becoming despondent, locking himself to a room. But killing himself is, again, too much. Considering his comatose mother and an alive sister. His situation and the ghost haunting is something that should make him doggedly want to LIVE.

I imagine it could also mean how letting hatred, no matter how justified, stew in your heart keeps inviting those who caused that pain into your home. Maybe the biker guy isn't really astral projecting at all: instead they're calling a vision of him through her hate and pain.

It always shows up but never attempts to hurt them in any way. It just pathetically begs for forgiveness as they wail it into mush. Their hatred manifested a version of the biker as they see him: a weak, cowardly creep who wants nothing but pity. The brother thinks he's getting revenge by constantly beating up the manifestation but all he's actually doing is just opening his wounds again. Eventually it becomes too much and he kills himself.

It's only when Noriko finally learns the biker died that the manifestation stops. He's dead, there's nothing and no one left to hate anymore. It's over and all she can do now is move on the best she can.

I bet if Ito explained what he was thinking while making this tale, it would be something stupid like 'I was thinking about how spooky it would be if you beat up a ball of ectoplasm over and over again'

I think this story was pretty straight-forward, there was a tulpa that was manifested by the heavy focus of the convict on asking forgiveness from the family, whether genuine or not. Just looking up how tulpa is used in modern supernatural context makes the story fall into place even if it never actually mentions the concept by name. Just like a horror story might involve someone succumbing to cannibalism because of extreme cold and transforming into a monster because of it, because of the shared cultural context people will understand why the monster transformation happens even if you don't include any exposition about the Wendigo.
Honestly this one is fairly straight-forward and understandable by Ito standards.

I'll add on to what the other anons said. I don't think it's best to directly compare it to Steins Gate because the MC doesn't have a consistent friend group throughout the VN. I think whether you like the VN or not really depends on whether you like the MC. He posts on 2chan, he doesn't like leaving his room, he "hates" and looks down on normalfags, he hates himself, he trusts nobody and is a paranoid wreck (for a good reason). I happened to love him for his unlikableness.

Thanks. This one always gets me, because it's so bizarre but also apocalyptic. I like that it's unclear what is actually happening, and the global nature of it adds a certain unique touch of horror. Just everything falling apart from the perspective of normal people with no ability to perceive or understand what's truly happening and the world falls apart around them. And not in a spectacular way, just in strange way.

Reminds me, thinking of it, of Pulse (Japanese horror movie from 2001), which similarly dealt with the dawning of the modern era of digital communication and the strange isolation of it all that could happen despite everyone still being around you. Billions Alone doesn't have the digital tech angle, but the spooky atmosphere near the end where the MC walks around an oddly deserted modern city is very much in that vein.

People try every so often, but unfortunately /co/'s in a bit of a rut lately (ie. for the last 10 years). Oddly, I think the demographics are way more silo'd off than /a/, if you can imagine that.
