That it´s unfinished and had to have a second adaptation that totally ruined the pacing and atmosphere that made 99 great. Don´t get me wrong, Togashi´s manga is decently good enough as it is but Furuhashi is like Oshii. His cinematography, vision and artistic sense elevate stuff from decent to greatness. His take on both HxH and Rurouni Kenshin surpasses the source material he had to work with.
As for Togashi´s manga itself i´d say it´s strength is the same as it´s weakness. He develops even minor characters way too much. True enough it makes his world feel more alive but it can also feel like an unfocused mess at times when the hierarchy between what´s truly important and what it´s not gets blurred that much, specially with hiatuses that take years. He literally comes back every 3 years, write like 10 or 20 chapters that don´t advance the story or focus on the main characters at all and then fucks off for another half a decade. If this continues we will just have a second Miura.
