I just finished reading the omnibus. Surprisingly, I don't have much to say by way of spoilers, but I sure do have VERY IMPORTANT OPINIONS to share.

Can't say I loved the manga. Reminds me a lot of Dedededede but slightly better. What bothers me about it is the cynicism. Not sure just how contrived these school bullying scenarios are, I know from media osmosis that it seems to be a more or less prevalent thing in Japan, but I have no idea how much of it actually real. Regardless, the sheer inaction of parents and the school staff is simply mind boggling to me. Is it even possible to ignore this kind of thing? Where are the adults? Is just one of those Japanese insectoid things that I can't understand?

I don't like the HAPPY HAPPY bullshit, it's such obvious emotional manipulation that it ends up feeling extremely hacky. But what intrigues me the most is the title. "Takopi's Original Sin". Original sin? Takopi is a kind of angelic being, he doesn't seem to be culpable of anything. He is ignorant of most things and profoundly well-intended in his actions. The only thing I can imagine would be sinful was him rebelling against his mother. Was this his original sin? Minor spoilers, but his mother back in Happy Happy planet seems to be some kind of dumb god, the general lack of religious sophistication of the Japanese is something that really impoverishes their media output and I cannot find this anything other than repulsive. Many times, and particularly in the case of this manga, it feels like the author is wrestling with larger metaphysical concepts but is eternally unable to reach an eureka moment. Chesterton said that everything about the Christian faith may be impossible to prove except for the certainty of original sin. I'll just finish this by saying that I just don't get what the point of this story really was, though I won't get into specifics about the ending. I know I'm not the brightest bulb, but this sort of miseryslop is something that I genuinely don't understand who was it made for. It's not accomplishing high literature, it's not comforting anyone, it's not even prescribing virtue. If anything, it's just more original sin if you want to get theological about it. I feel that the only thing this accomplishes is desensitising people to evil, dulling the senses.

He ends up fucking up the lives of both girls regardless of who he "helps" (see both of the Bad Ends to both timelines), but ultimately manages to do more good than bad by the end by sacrificing himself to create a scenario where both girls end up becoming friends. Both girls were on the "fringes" of nip society and would've ended up alone and either dead, bullied, or a bully and allowing the two of them to become friends saved them. Some will critique the fact that the MC became friends with her bully but the the manga shows that she was capable of being just as cruel if given the opportunity.

That's a universal thing. I grew up in Europe and telling your teachers or parents about bullying almost always made it worse. The countless stories I've heard in real life and read online over the years tells me it happens in every corner of the world. I fully understood how Shizuka felt when she turned down Azuma's suggestion to try talking to different teachers, you become a lot less willing to try again and risk things getting worse. Especially someone with difficulty exerting herself like Shizuka. I guarantee you in a teacher's lounge Marina would easily spin her side as misguided pranks or wanting to be friends or just making shit up and accusing Shizuka of being an instigator. Regardless it would almost surely end in the teacher patting them both on the backs then telling them to make up and be friends.
Granted it was never anything on the level of "KILL YOURSELF" being carved into a desk but you could make the case that's visual information to quickly show the viewer what Shizuka is experiencing. Though I've also seen anime and manga that have had similar things done so it's probably a real thing in Japan.

The Happy Happy stuff is it being a play on kids media. It's a darker take on something like Doraemon with the view that magic gadgets can't do much to solve serious issues like bullying and broken homes.
