Hazards of fantasy exaggerating high castle gates. I don't think it's really a problem specific to mangaka. You'll see the same thing in western fantasy works as well. It's just a matter of artists not actually studying castles in general to get details reasonably correct.

Oh, I'm not challenging the possibility of the gate, I'm just noting that it seems to fall into one of the usual pitfalls of creating fantasy gates. Namely how gates tend to get depicted as tall as or nearly as tall as the walls, regardless of how tall the walls are. When historically while gates were big, they usually weren't as big as the walls unless the walls were relatively low. You might have a recession nearly as large as the walls that the gate was sitting in, but the gate itself would top out at a few times the height of a man.

Close enough. My point is that for a real gate, most of the empty space for that gate would be a recession in the wall, and the actual gate itself would be a half or even a third that size. You only really need enough height that a loaded wagon or a man on horseback can comfortably pass through. At most you'd only need enough height that infantry carrying pikes, or cavalry with lances aren't banging them on the gate when they go through.
Fantasy gate on the other hand just tend to go "the gates just a big smaller than the wall, right?" and put pointlessly gigantic gates with no real gatehouse or defensive structures above. At worst they'll even include a portcullis, without there being space for raising a lowering it. Which to be fair is a pitfall that GS has avoided.

One thing I don’t get about how the manga treats Goblins is how insanely underrated they are by the Guild. Even a Silver specialist like GS often struggles to clear nests — and they are threats that the Guild thinks are fine for newbies? Like wtf? How many low-ranking Adventurers got killed because "Goblins are weak"? Also, if they’re that dangerous in reality why does no one pay more for the subjection quests? Are villagers just not worth it? The governments don’t care enough to cleanse them? Seems strange.

Because the quests are paid for by poor villages who can’t afford much.

The ones that GS is usually helping? Sort of. They’re tiny villages on the kingdom’s western frontier. With populations in the double digits, or low triple digits at best. Most have such a little impact on the kingdom that their absence wouldn’t be noticed at all. So there’s a limit on how much the kingdom can afford to spend on defense.

They care, but the government has to spend a lot of its limited resources preparing for threats like demon lords, or armies of undead. That leaves no money for small, local threats like goblins.

GS was solo clearing nests using crappy gear. He'd have an easier time if he used better gear. Most of the time nests are small enough that they can be taken out by a competent rookie team. It's only when a nest has gotten particularly large that a competent team gets wiped out.

Sword maiden is thirsty as fuck, but completely off gs radar. She's also a sword maiden, she can't act on it.

High elf archer sees gs as the ptsd riddled mess he is and wants to brighten his life with the true meaning of adventuring.

Guild girl wants to date him, but some of that it admiration for all the hard work he does.

Cow girl is basically his wife. She doesn't even get dressed in the morning before seeing him off. He's not ready for romance, but she's the only girl he thinks of as having a complex role in his life

Does it get better? Yes, they fight dinosaurs, there's tons of bro moments, and priestess becomes seriously battle tested

If GS got dragged into a quest with no goblin content and his party ran into something absurd (demon lord, litch, dragon, etc) ie something silver-ranks have no business facing, and the enemy gave the party the option to leave without harm (because it was busy or something), would GS take the chance and drag his party out of danger? Or would he throw himself into certain dead because that’s what protagonists do?

Yeah, he'd have the party just leave. No one in danger who might be dead by the time someone gets back. No clear threats like a ritual that's going to get people killed going on. Just something that's a problem best dealt with by someone else. Sort of like volume 10 where their investigation into suspected goblin tracks leads to a suspicious burial mound and constructs that aren't living goblins. They deal with constructs attacking them, and call it a day and report the mound to the guild rather than investigate themselves.
